Last Shot against Missouri

They even made a rule for it, but I don’t know that Boston had that ball
In her hands for more than .1. But that rule says the only way to score with less than .2 is on a tip. I guess if she had volleyball-tipped that inbounds pass, it would have counted? Regardless, I thought it was a heck of a play.

I could not understand why there was not a more thoughtful review of the time on the clock after the shot. The review lasted like what -15 seconds. It deserved to be more carefully reviewed. Dawn looked so po’d I think she just didn’t think about it.

I thought that she got it off in time. Why was this not reviewed???
Because the rule book says it wasn’t good. The only way it would have been good is if the inbounds pass was an alley-oop tipped in by a tall player like Boston or Cardozo. As soon as I saw it wan’t an alley-oop inbounds I knew any other shot would be no good — which is what the rule book specifically states.

I’ve timed high school players for years in teaching them to get the shot off quicker. The goal was .7 from the time it touches your hand until you release. And that’s with the shooting hand in the shooting pocket aimed at the goal on the catch so no time used for adjustments after the catch. Ball hits hand - pull trigger. I thought the rule said .4 to catch and shoot. .4 would be rushing it to the max.

Hate to 2nd guess Dawn and staff but how many times did they blow by our defenders for a layup? For their last shot, why not have Boston, Cordero, Ahmehir/Saxton in a zone defense under the basket. That would pretty much shut off layups. I would much rather get beat by a 3 than a layup. Seemed like we could have used our height to our advantage and we didn’t. I love Dawn but…why not do that?

I was wondering the same thing especially after your comment. A zone would have forced the outside shot, which also had worked for than, but not as well late. I think they used Brea’s aggressive against her as well on that play. She followed the ball and got caught up in that screen. Even so we had two of our biggest and best right there and she got it over them.

Like I’ve said before…We don’t shoot very well from the perimeter. We didn’t play with much intensity against Missouri either.

Sometimes the truth cannot be obscured. Some of our fans are like the Tennessee fans today concerning that goal line call when, in reality, both that game and this one should never have gone to OT.
I haven't heard much complaining about the last call at all. But there's always a few, I guess.

I remember the last time Mizzou beat us on a last second shot: it ruined our season and we never recovered.

Edit to add:

Just doubled checked. We actually won the national title that season.

It could happen again, but this team will have to develop more dynamism on offense. It's as though we are plodding along all the time.

Coach knows best but IMHO, we need to be recruiting some shooters too
If we get Fulwiley from Keenan, she will cure part of that. She’s consistently draining 3’s from the volleyball lines and just in the 11th grade. Best PG prospect we have ever had a chance at IMO. An absolute must get for the ‘23 class.

What gets me is a lot of these girls come in from high school as great shooters and when here, it suddenly disappears. Cooke was a great looking shooter and now can't find the hoop. They need some more fire in the line up beside the pass around the horn option. Beal, Saxton and Amihere will rarely take that 10-15 footer. I hate to say it but you need to sit Cooke until she can find her shot, maybe Rivers instead.

I completely understand why you say that about Zia. That was my initial impression as well. She shot just 4-19 from the field. But the fact is we lost the game in the 10 minutes she wasn't on the floor. We were +8 when she was in the game.

After rewatching, I will say that if every player had played as hard as Cooke and the coaches had coached as hard as Cooke played, we would have won by 20 points. Her defense was exceptional. Offensively, she often took shots because others wouldn't. They had wide open shots and didn't take them!

IMO, we lost that game because coach didn't press a team with only 8 players, 3 of them scrubs who seldom play. That lack of defensive intensity and killer instinct filtered down to the players, with the exception of Zia, Boston and a few others. Lesson learned. I hope so anyway.

And let's hope Zia can find her shot again. The effort is there, though. She's a warrior.

About Rivers, she needs to get healthy and on the court. I think the offensive potential is there (she's already a plus defender); she just needs some game experience.

Point taken. Cooke is another blue collar player.

Why would we play Rivers instead of Cooke. She has not shot the ball consistently. Players go through shooting slumps.

Cooke is in a 4-5 game bad shooting slump. Less than 25% in most cases. As the other poster says she brings hustle and defense to the table. They need consistent shooting as of now.

Were vulnerable to the dri;ble drive. Have been for years.

I've been curious the last couple of years with the phrase "dribble drive". Evidently, it's all the rage and is a new move that has revolutionized the game of basketball.

No offense, but in my day we just said "take you to the hole".
