If memory serves correctly, he cited the state of public education for his kids as a major reason. It sparked a pretty big controversy.
Caught lightning in a bottle when he signed Grant Williams. He was only an hour and a half up the road. I wonder if we even looked at him
That was just a p.c. reason. The real reason was the lack of fan interest/support at Clemson.
Perhaps, but that still stirred up a hornet's nest. Why not just state the real reason? Mack Brown did when he left unc (coincidentally, also for Texas).
And Tennessee was hot garbage just a few seasons ago. Proof it can change quickly with the right moves.

Damn truth. I think if he is healthy we won that game. Think it would have been a 50/50 shot against unc. Sucks.

You mean it didn't take him 7 or 8 years to make some noise at Tennessee?
He left Clemson because he couldn't get to the top against ACC coaches. Couldn't beat Dean and K and others on a regular basis. All other reasons are just top dressing.
All I know is he owned us at Clemson. We got him twice his first year at UTjr. We are now in his rear view mirror.
I take seriously anyone who can beat us. Admittedly that is an increasing number of people.
X Texas and Clemson coach, rumored to be shady over nite built Tennessee into a power. Martin in seven years can't beat the Woffords of the world.
Barnes never gets the one-and-dones so I don't think he is real shady. Not like Bruce Pearl and Calipari who have been caught and Krychewski who has not been caught.
Reading that article, I didn't realize that NC State denied Pete Maravich admission. I wonder what Pistol Pete would have done playing in the ACC.
Yes, imagine. Pete's high school transcript must have been awful if the coach's son could not gain admission. Particularly when college admission to State was not as competitive and there was less oversight.
