Miami: Firing Diaz, Hiring Cristobal, how it and more all went down

Can’t read the article, but I’ve heard so many times that Miami means business. Not buying it until I see results.

But do wonder what the details are.

I don't understand why Miami fired their coach.
He was having winning seasons.
Same reason Clemson fired Bowden, Hatfield, etc...you have us and then you have them. 8 wins or so isn't good enough for winners. They want championships. Meanwhile in Columbia we pay our WBB more than our Football coach that makes the money for all sports.

Exactly. Same with Texas and SoCal. I'm not interested in hype.

You or I could be the head football coach and football would still be the major revenue producer. Just a reminder that DS brings a lot of goodwill to the school.

I'm nowhere near being an accountant - I took an introductory accounting course at Midlands TEC in the early '80s - and after all these years, I still have trouble properly categorizing debits and credits. But one thing I did grasp was that when calculating the value of a business (assets, liabilities, etc.) one has to take community goodwill into consideration. Same with DS & WBB.

6-7, 8-3, 7-5 is not considered good enough for Miami. In addition Diaz went all in and bet on himself this year, even making himself the DC, nothing wrong with that as long as you deliver.
Diaz had seriously raised expectations for this season, and obviously failed.
It would be refreshing if a certain school we know of decided that there is a new set of higher objectives that must be met or there are consequences.

Our WBB should make more than our Football coach. She's produced a better product year in and year out than any coach we've had in our Athletic history. Stop putting one of our coaches down to make your points. I wouldn't be surprised that when it's all said and done, Dawn Staley may go down as one of the greatest coaches in history.

There's probably a "base" salary for each coach (head and assistant) in each sport, likely based on factors such as expenses and revenue generated. But then when you also factor in a coaches stature, goodwill, publicity, etc., that can add a substantial amount to the "base" salary.

Dawn has proven herself. If and when Shane proves himself on her level, I would expect him to have a higher salary than her's. That is not sexist. It is publicity and economics.

Here we go again. There is a reason that we are one of the very few schools (UConn being the other outlier?) that seems to think it's wise to pay our WBB coach the same amount as the head football coach. Why are we an outlier? Because to do so makes no economic sense.

An outlier? No, we are in the forefront when it comes to this particular situation. WBB is growing by leaps and bounds. For the first time in our athletic history, we have a premiere coach at the beginning of her career, not the end like others (Holtz and Spurrier). It's nice to be respected in at least one sport. She deserves admiration, not your contempt.

I'm not sure what she deserves...but I know a WBB coach should not be paid the same amount as a head football coach, particularly an SEC football coach. That should not happen. Ever.

And yes, our decision to do that makes us an outlier. This is a rarity when you look at schools across the entire country.

college sports is a business. How does this goodwill that you speak of work? Does it add anything to the bottom line?

One decision doesn’t have anything to do with the other.

We got a bargain with Beamer in that he had no previous HC experience. His salary and that of his staff will grow (as evidenced by Muschamp and staffs salaries) as the product and desirably increase).

Dawn is one of if not the best WBB coach in the whole country. What she has done for USC is nothing short of amazing! She, Spurrier, and Tanner (as baseball coach) have put USC on the SEC map and thrust us into the national spotlight. It’s hard for money to buy what they have done by bringing SEC/national championships to our starving (for success) university.

I believe in Coach Beamer and it will not be long before he gets his increase in pay and contract extension.

We remain an outlier...it's hard to deny it.

The $64,000 question is are they going to allow Cristobal to recruit all the schools and "eligible" players in South Florida.

Increase in applications.....in this case especially among female applicants. Both in-state and out. The greater the number of applicants, the more selective the school can be.....and improve the academic reputation of the school, which brings more grants, etc.

Success of a football team would have the same effect....on a grander scale.

Coaches are paid what they are worth, and the value they bring to the school. And right now, Staley is worth more than Beamer.

With some 10+ win seasons under his belt, that will probably change.
