Name, Image and Likeness (NIL): Charles Barkley just expressed the same concerns I have had from word "Go" concerning NIL.

The QBs, and some skill players are going to get the endorsements that other players on the team won't get. As we all know if a team has an outstanding QB, RB, WR or whatever, those players are going to earn mega bucks. However, the big ugly offensive lineman will not earn any money at all in many cases. Hence, these type situations are going to create resentment among teammates. Again, this has been my fear from the very beginning. If I'm a offensive lineman and I am working hard in the trenches so the QB or RB can look great and they are the ones benefitting from NIL, I'm not going to be happy.

It's going to be interesting to see how things workout because NIL is going to happen, like it or not.

That will always be the case, no matter what level those guys are on. But all-conference guys on the O-line will still get their opportunities. We will actually see a free market for their services and I think the players are going to be very surprised at how little across the board most of them are worth.

Same dynamic in the pros and some how they make it work.

Maybe members of the tennis and golf teams may show endorsement resentment as well.

This rule, while I think it is right, is going to be a nightmare for coaches keeping chemistry in the locker room. True that the skill players are going to be those most desired by whomever may want to use their name and likeness. Then you are going to have the loudmouth QB, RB, or WR, bragging to all in the locker room about the cash they have in pocket. While the offensive lineman that pave the way for their glory get little, or nothing. That is going to end up being a huge issue that coaches will have to deal with.
The other issue for the coach, and his most important hire, will be the support staff person in charge of lining up paying gigs for potential recruits with businesses friendly to the program. I can see this quickly becoming a bidding war with prepackaged deals already cut.

Y’all so funny! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
NCAA and the colleges been financially messing over athletes for decades. But now that they have fought to get a taste, they are suddenly the problem because they might cause dissension in the locker room. SMH

I'm not saying the players are the problem but just think for a minute. If I'm an offensive lineman that is working just as hard as the QB or even harder to protect him so that he can make great passes, runs, etc and he comes driving up to practice in a new vet and I get nothing, I'm going to get mad. That is just the long and short of the deal, chemistry or no chemistry in the locker room.

But in the NFL the offensive linemen are earning big bucks, not as much as the QBs but big bucks, nonetheless. In college most of the offensive linemen will earn nothing besides their scholarships.

You really think these coaches aren’t going to have boosters throw money at elite offensive lineman?

You think Clemson didn’t pay Jackson Carman?

Happens in the pros everyday and some how they survive. Happens everyday when Coach and AD drives up with his multimillion dollar deal. Why is it that the lowest paid guy is the problem? And that the people bitching the most are the ones with the most money? Rich blaming the poor for causing them problems. SMH

This whole process will be so corrupt it is going to rival the corruption that takes place in the federal government!

It's not the lowest paid guy that is the problem, it's the NO paid guy in NIL that is the problem.

You are right. BUT the NCAA and colleges made every athlete their NO PAID bitch for 25 years while they were swimming in huge money.
Ed O’Bannon said how come you are selling my likeness and I get nothing? The NCAA instead of cutting the athletes in played hard ball. NCAA and the colleges have only themselves to blame for the situation. If you don’t adapt and bend to the future, it will break you.

These guys are all being paid something now. You’re being naive to think there will be anyone of quality that isn’t getting something.

That’s the thing. I’m not a fan of the idea, but how many college players are worth serious money from big endorsements? A handful maybe? The rest will get local car dealerships and such.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against any college kid making all the money he can earn. I just think it's going to be very difficult for the coaches to keep everyone happy.

There are others that share my concern, too. But it is what it is and it's coming to a campus near you. LOL!

The "trouble" you describe is the principle of "Haves and Have Nots". It's nothing new.

It's why most Heisman winners thank their Offensive Lines first thing before their coaches or anyone else.

My greatest fear is "tampering" by boosters. NIL has the potential to take recruiting back to the Wild West.

I have no doubts that as we debate this that Saban has at least 2 - 3 people (plus, an assistant to file and answer the phone) working on a "spreadsheet of value" for the entire 85 man roster.

Ex.

Bubba - "Hello, I want Mac Jones to do commercials for my used car lot."

Crimson Tide Value Dept (CTVD) - "That's great. How much were you looking to spend?"

Bubba - "$5,000".

CTVD - "I'm sorry Bubba. But QB goes for $50K. Oh, wait. Mac was a Heisman Finalist. That's $75K. For $5k you can have the Long Snapper."

People bitch about Saban. But, you know what. He's playing Chess while everyone else is playing Checkers.

Nobody has messed over anyone. These students freely accepted scholarships, free housing, meals, training, travel etc. and given huge opportunities to better themselves. Just because there is money in someone else's bank account it doesn't mean that you are entitled to it

I have less of an issue of "likeness selling" than I do with the proposition to pay players different amounts based on sport. IMO, the star QB should be paid the same "stipend" as the golfer. Let market demand, i.e., likeness selling be the differential.

And the linemen who choose to be on the line have to know going in that their role isn't as sexy as the QB they protect. The smart QB will not show off, but will show proper gratitude to the linemen, especially if they want "protection."

I have no doubt each athlete will make the exact same money for "fairness". Can't have the star QB making more than the bench warmer that's not fair.

Isn’t it funny how all these raging capitalist suddenly turn socialists when somebody else wants to get paid?

I don't understand why athletes VOLUNTEERED to be messed over by the NCAA and colleges for decades? Please explain.

The original question isn’t dishonest because you won’t/can’t answer it.
Ok, i’ll give you that. But if you are so blithely unaware of how “amateur athletes” have been used by the NCAA and colleges over the last forever, I can’t educate you in the space of a chat room.
You will have do your own homework so that the scales will fall from your eyes. Go with God, my child.

Why do you keep giving an answer to a question I’m not asking?

Let’s assume for the sake of the discussion that everything you say about the NCAA is true.

My question is why did athletes voluntarily agree to be mistreated instead of just not playing?

Your asking the question in that fashion is insulting to athletes and totally ignorant of how systems work!! It is equivalent to asking why do women ask to be raped? Or why did slaves asked to enslaved?

Wow. Rape and enslavement are done without a person’s consent. That’s the exact opposite of voluntarily agreeing to play sports.

Go with God my child. When you want to truly understand how systems and power work in sports I suggest you start with the Curt Flood story or the writings of Dr Harry Edwards. Til then have a wonderful time rooting for our Gamecocks.

Come back with an honest question after you educate yourself on the whole sham of amateur athletics known as the NCAA. Got it?
I’m not convinced that amateur athletics was ever a sham. The athletes receive an education, housing, and meals for their abilities. This isn’t just football, baseball , or basketball. It’s every sport where a kid receives a full ride scholarship. In many sports, college athletics is a means to an end to get into professional sports. That being said, I believe an athlete should be compensated for his or her likeness.
