why do the 11 seeds have to play an extra/play-in game?
Are those teams considered to be in the Dance, or does that recognition only come after they win their play-in game?I think it's the 2 lowest at large seeds and the 2 lowest conference reps that play in the play-in games.
It is for attendance reasons. Nobody in Dayton would go out to the arena and pay to see four # 16 seeds play, so they put play # 11 seeds also. Last year big names like Syracuse and UCLA were in the play-in round.why do the 11 seeds have to play an extra/play-in game?

Never thought Dayton had a problem filling the arena for tournament games....they are an NCAA favorite. It is for attendance reasons. Dayton is the permanent site for the play-in games. I don't think they would fill it if only 16 seeds were playing.Never thought Dayton had a problem filling the arena for tournament games....they are an NCAA favorite.
Most school do, but there are some obvious exceptions. Also a way to get more majors in the tournament and keep some coaches happy bc most schools judge you by tournament appearances.
This seems like a reasonable explanation, but it's tantamount to the NCAA admitting they are throwing out logic for the sake of ticket sales. By definition, if somebody should have to "play their way in" to the tournament, it should be those teams that are the worst teams in the tournament; the #16 seeds. If the selection committee truly believes the last of the at-large teams to make the tournament are the worst teams, then the committee should make them the #16 seeds. It is for attendance reasons. It takes 8 teams to play 4 gamesI think it's the 2 lowest at large seeds and the 2 lowest conference reps that play in the play-in games.
