If the new bill passes allowing college athletes to be employees and form unions, then it is all over and who in the world would want to coach 18-19 year olds who form a "union"? So this bill would give players ability to bargain for compensation, set work hours, set working conditions, and more. Beyond that, if they are paid as employees they will still not be taxed or pay taxes according to bill.
So we want to give some of the prima donnas the ability to dictate everything. As if they dont already, a good many of them, think they are Gods gift to a college campus and see themselves above the regular student, this will make it worse. If they get paid, my thought is, no more full scholarships. Take the money you make and pay school the way others do. You dont get free school and then get paid for going as well as insurance, full medical care, meals, tutoring and much more that is completely inaccessible to regular students.
Also, why am I not surprised one of those pushing this bill is Bernie Sanders?
I love college sports because so many play for the love of the game knowing they more than likely wont go beyond that level. Now it will be all about getting paid. Players will sit out when not happy, wont practice (Iverson anyone?), wont listen to the coaches much at all.

OK maybe I am seeing it worse than it is but I truly dont see this ending well at all.

I wonder why no one has figured out that paying players will drastically increase ticket prices. We will be paying NFL type prices.
I won’t and many more won’t. I think people will stick to watching on tv rather than pay a lot more hard earned money to watch college kids get paid to play the game. Why would I pay extra to support kids on a full ride when I am trying my best to pay my own child’s college bills without having to take out a loan to do so. It makes money tight but means those kids can forget my money. And really we all know this is primarily football and men’s basketball. Girls golf and men’s swimming won’t have or do much concerning this.

I don't think you over-exaggerated it one bit. It will ruin college sports.
Basketball is about ruined. It's a shadow of it's former self.
This would be a crushing blow that many (myself included) would not contribute to.

The Pro sports franchises are going to start realizing disappointing trends in their bottom dollar in the next year or two going forward....trends that can't be excused as "Covid-related". Maybe that will give enough of a scare to collegiate groups to make sure this does not happen.

I don’t have an issue with medical, tutoring, facilities, etc that come along with being a student athlete. That’s just the cost of doing business - similar to how pros get medical care, travel, and nice facilities.

However, the compensation that the students receive in cash should have the tuition and R&B deducted. So if a player was to make 50k then let’s just call it 20k should be deducted for tuition and other expenses. I would be in favor of a significant portion of the remaining 30k going into a 401k (which a player could max out at 19.5k) and leave the player with 10.5k for expenses, walking around $, money to send home etc.

It gets difficult tho. Does Trevor Lawrence make the same as some back up center? I would say yes. Additional $ could be made by star players by owning their image rights and doing advertising and endorsement deals.

My only question is - will this improve the on field product? College football is terrible to watch and has been for about 5 years. It’s way behind the NFL from an entertainment standpoint.

IDK about other leagues but the NFL is doing just fine. Hell, the Thursday night package alone is worth 1 billion/year just to televise 15 games. The new SEC package w/ Disney is only worth $300 million/year.

Those of you with liberal political leanings that also love college sports should take a long look at what people like Bernie Sanders wants to do to something you love.

The right has been trying to show you that this is the inevitability of leftist thought and they've been doing the same type of thing to every facet of life.

It’s a mixed bag of free market and Liberal (union) agendas. But then again - many elected republicans were in favor of Amazon employees unionizing in Alabama. So are unions still a Liberal thing? I know the Trump campaign targeted union voters in the last election since the Midwest has turned red.

This whole discussion doesn’t fit into one political ideology. Please don’t try to force it.

maybe what you should be cheering for is deregulation. Abolish the NCAA and let the market dictate players worth and teams success. Run these things like a business and it’s survival of the fittest. Some schools will thrive others will not. Maybe a new league forms? Who knows?

I’ll also add that the far left and far right aren’t that different in much of their thought. Both have a strong populist bent. Josh Hawley (a fascist) and Bernie Sanders (a socialist) have found common ground on several issues.

The market has decided, that's the system we have now. People like Sanders are trying to legislate change to satisfy their desires for the victimization of everyone and a false belief that equity equals equality.

Trump targeting labor unions for votes has absolutely nothing to do with this and besides two wrongs don't make a right.

I'm certainly not saying that the NCAA shouldn't be forced to allow some concession and change but this idea of paying student athletes will be the destruction of college athletics as we know it.

I agree with you this doesn't fit into the political discourse neatly but it is this type of leftist thought that leads us down this path.

If you want to level the playing field so the teams have similar talent so the football product is at a higher level, then you will have to control which team gets which recruit.

Markets evolve as facts in the grounds change. They system in place was developed before college athletics was a multi-billion dollar industry.Labor is eventually going to want a piece of that pie.

I’m not certain that legislating the playing of players is the right way to go about things- but if it leads to the undermining of and eventual dissolution of the NCAA and an unbridled free market then I’d think you would be in favor of it.

If you want to get paid to cut hair...
rent the booth!
If the schools amenities allow you to make money you should have to
pay.

Pros don’t pay for their amenities.

Folks in high paying jobs or competitive fields don’t incur fees for high end offices and other perks (club memberships, expense accounts, lucrative benefits packages, signing bonuses, etc)

Attracting top talent is paramount to an organizations success. Perks and facilities are the cost of doing business.

Bam! Extremists typically have such convoluted political views that they are neither conservative or liberal.

They are not our friends.

Sounds like a draft.... 😉
Or maybe we could limit the amount of 5* players teams can sign.....that would be a grand mess.

The free market deciding these things I would be in favor of. A new bill sponsored by Bernie Sanders, not so much.

I get it.

You’d support a labor strike that would eventually lead to change and open markets, compensation, etc but don’t support government intervention that leads to change.

It’s more about the process than the result. I can agree with that.

Pretty much. I've never seen the government get involved with many things they don't screw up. Concentrated power is not rendered harmless by the good intentions of those who wield it.

Yeah but the janitor (8th WR-only sniffs the field on ST) doesn’t get the same benefits as the VP (Starting QB). Even the NFL has set rookie contracts that are valued based on draft position.

Would that 3rd string Center who needs ACL surgery be a good business move to foot the entire Bill with no deductible? Plus the cost of tuition.

There’s a reason college allows 85 scholarship and NFL only allows 53 man roster. Most players are expect to contribute within year 1 at high draft picks, OL are 3-4 year development at the college level- so do you invest 3-4 years of money into a lineman for 1- 2solid year of production?
