I feel like there are fewer calls to be made in the NHL overall, and definitely fewer ticky-tack fouls.
It’s the little contact fouls that get refs in other sports in trouble - mostly because one of those fouls could literally be called on every play of the game (holding, pass interference, reaching in, charge/block, etc.). But the refs in football and basketball can’t call every one or they’d ruin the game. So they call them subjectively if they hit a certain level of severity - which makes every call a gray area. The refs are set up to fail in other sports.
