What are your thoughts on why the NCAA became such an ineffective organization?

For lack of any better idea of my own I think it was just part of their DNA. They essentially did nothing from 1906 to 1948 when the cracked down hard on gambling and pay for play schemes. 42 years.

Then in the 50s and 60s they somehow wrestled broadcasting rights from the schools. By the 80s they were litigating with their own members over TV rights.

It’s as if they’ve been tone deaf since day one. Would a Roy Kramer or Sankey have been a more effective leader or was the institution unchangeable?
