Canon 7D Mark II. A GREAT crop sensor camera, arguably the best on

market right now. And you will get an argument depending on who you ask. Sony is credited with the best sensor on the market. The new Mark II still has a slightly inferior sensor, but now has two logic chips that help offset the difference in the sensor. The dual chips bump the camera to 10fps with zero buffer lag. Nikon has outstanding performance and is never a bad choice. A lot of Canon and Nikon users have been recently moving to the Sony because of the improved sensor. However, Sony has a smaller third party vendor support. I would recommend physically holding all of the brands you consider in your hands. I much, much prefer the feel and location of the Canon bodies and buttons/knobs. If you are not accustomed to the size and weight of a professional camera, especially a top end full frame sensor body, you may find a smaller format camera like what is found in Sam's or Costco a better fit. The lenses will still work on the bigger format cameras if you upgrade later. The newer small format with full size lens mount may suit you to your satisfaction. You lose speed and efficiency in making on the fly changes as you compose your shot, but you still have high quality lens options. Also, these small formats have more options in brands to choose from.

Neither. Check out mirrorless such as Micro 4/3 by Olympus/Panasonic Lumix. I have a Nikon D7000 with a complete system and went to a Lumix Micro 4/3 system. The Nikon is a dinosaur. You can check this all out at www.dpreview.com.

I looked into mirrors before buying my Canon SL1, but, other than the size, the Canon was better, in my opinion. I'll add a mirrorless to my collection after the technology gets refined a little bit more.

As to the OP, spend a little extra and get a Canon. They are much better than Nikon.

One issue the OP failed to note is what he will be using the camera for the most. As I said, I have a DSLR and a Mirrorless system (a Lumix GX1 with several lens, including the Leica 25mm). I travel a lot so the smaller system makes moving around a breeze. I have used in in Europe and Asia and find it better than lugging a bigger system around. By the way, the newest release Olympus is an indication that nay gap in IQ is being closed rapidly. Global sales of mirrorless are also eating into the bigger cameras.

I think it depends on what you are shooting (speaking of Nikon vs Canon only). On the high end, Canon wins. But I've found that Nikon is very affordable on the lower and mid end. Brands won't really matter for 90% of picture takers (not true photographers)

Not a "pro" by any stretch...

Really a novice, would be used for family pics, special events, Gamecock sports, etc...but saw an offer for a Canon EOS Rebel for approx. 25% off, didn't know whether to jump on it or wait...

You can also check into non-DSLR cameras that are quite a bit more that the basic pocket camera. The Fuji x100s and the Lumix LX-100 come to mind. Do yourself a favor and go to dpreview.com. They will have everything that you need to know in making a choice. I go to it at least once a day.

Pentax... Great glass plus stabilation is built in camera body rather than being in the lens which means you can use vintage lenses and still have the stabilazation feature.
