Can anyone recommend good restaurants, fun things to do, etc..

I appreciate it. Go cocks!

Gatlinburg- wow, havent been there since the kids were little- is it basically the same place as 20 years ago? Always liked it back then, just havent been in forever. But to answer your question, there used to be a german place where you could eat and cut up on stage- was kind of fun. Big help, huh?

Just take a lot of money. The whole deal is a tourist trap. But I've always had a pretty good time there, it's just that there's no one thing you are there for other than to walk around and spend money. Many good restaurants and things to do, you'll see when you get there. My favorite Gatlinburg store is the clock store. Hand carved, beautiful clocks.

You a wildlife lover? Cades Cove is about 30 min away and free. Several old churches in there too. Beautiful valley

I agree with Judson on Cades Cove. One of the jewels of the Smokies. As for restaurants; if you like fish, drive over to Pigeon Forge and go to Huck Finn's. They have the best catfish ever. And if I recall correctly, they bring you a large plate full and if you can eat that and want more they bring it until you say enough. We always go there when we're in that area. It's one of the places where the food is really good and you never leave hungry.

If I were taking wife and myself (I have 3 kids under 10 so the trip would be different with everyone) I would get a room at the Riverhouse Motor Lodge. Once parked there you don't have to drive in town. Walk to the Peddler Steak House for dinner. Eat in the bar to avoid the 2 hour wait. Salad bar is top shelf. There was a small bar in one of the off main store clusters that had a guitar player/singer the we visited for 15 years. Sorry that I cant help on the place better. My point is you can be touristy in Gatlinburg or hunt for some bits of a neat old mountain resort.

Place to stay: Zodders Inn (milk n cookies are served in the afternoon as a treat)

Place to eat in Gatlinburg: Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant (best home style around)

I do reccomend taking the short drive over to Knoxville one nite and eating at the best steakhouse in the entire state of Tennessee: Ye Olde Steakhouse
it's in east Knoxville on Chapman Hwy so it's a rather short scenic drive....

Here's the web site: http://www.yeoldesteakhouse.com

Also several great pancake houses for breakfast or supper too.....

Be sure to gas up in Spartanburg County when you come and gas up in Gatlinburg before you leave.....gas NC is the most expensive in the south....SC border to TN border is about 80 or so miles....

Ole Smokey for free moonshine. You can pretty much drink as much as u want. Just keep getting back in line. Olde Gatlinburg rentals is a condo that's reasonably priced and right in the middle of downtown.

Thanks everyone for the responses. We got here last night. We woke up to snow this morning, so that was pretty cool.

USC92EEPE.. we actually went to peddlers for dinner last night. You're correct, it was really good...especially the salad bar.

We visited last weekend looking for a cabin to buy. . This area--excerpt for all the hideous orange flags--is So beautiful no matter what season it is.

I am glad it worked for you. Actually used to be one in Cola on Devine. Also in Asheville. Still one in Boone. The arcade under the Needle was always fun for us. XL air hockey in the downstairs area. I'm up for a trip. G

Calhouns for ribs or steak and a salad with their house dressing and pancake pantry for breakfast can't beat those two. There is always a line wrapped around the pancake pantry in the mornings but it's worth it.

Suggestions? Don't go. Worse than Helen, Ga.
Worse than Helen? Hardly. Helen has about 3 things to see and you're done, if that. And Helen needs to drop the whole 'we German' thing. Their buildings are'nt and their food certainly is'nt. As a German descendant I was offended. Their wiener schnitzel was atrocious. It's the equivelent of serving a real Italian egg noodles and ketchup and calling it spaghetti.Bunch of rednecks trying to play 4 seasons is what that place is.

Drive across the mountain to Cherokee and Harrah's casino. Good food , good entertainment and lots of gaming.

We always went to the Peddler for steaks. It has a nice venue and is predictable.

Cherokee should be mini nuked. The clothes those Indians sell fall apart on the second wash, their 'food'....sucks, and their gaming is rigged.

The last few years my wife and I have rented a cabin in Bryson City and taken the very scenic drive to Gatlinburg. We stay for the day and then drive back to the cabin that evening. We ususally take 100$ spending cash each, not including our meal and just pal around for the day. We prefer the quite solitutde or a smaller town like Bryson City vs there. But its still nice to go for a day.

We still have the Peddler in Spartanburg also.

I am with you. Years back, we went white water rafting, and stayed at an old inn in Bryson City (Fryemont Inn). We loved it. As for Gatlinburg, biggest disappointment we have had on a trip. Ended up spending most of the day at a bar. Just depends on what you are looking for. The mountains for me is a place for solitude, slow pace, and just take in the beauty-not a tourist trap. It has been about 10 years since we were at Bryson city so I guess it could have changed.
