I married into cat ownership and can't get rid of the thing. It was my wife's roommate during medical school and provided companionship during her single days and prior to us having children. Her "need" for companionship for the cat dropped precipitously after having our first child. After our second, the cat has become simply a burden and nuisance. But the cat is old and it would seem cruel to ship it off to a new home this late in life. I've already told her we aren't providing medical care to prolong its life whenever it gets to that point.
