George Mendonsa, who maintained for decades that he was the sailor in an iconic 1945 Times Square photo, dubbed "The Kiss," that came to symbolize the end of World War II, has died, his family says. He was 95.

The veteran died early Sunday in Newport, Rhode Island, just two days before his 96th birthday, daughter Sharon Molleur told CNN. He will be buried at St. Columba Cemetery in his hometown of Middletown, Rhode Island, she said.
"When I look at that photograph, I just think of my dad's service, and how happy he was that it was all over," Molleur said.

Just saw it on the news, said the nurse in the picture died two years ago. Amazing both lived into their 90’s.

Ironically, the lady he married was at the scene as well when he kissed the nurse. It shows her in the background. I wonder what she thought of her then boyfriend kissing the nurse. LOL!

Correction: I said they were engaged but after watching the video again it said his wife was standing close by and they were on a date. So, it implies they were married at the time, don't know if that was the case or not.

That’s in Sarasota, FL. See that often...always thought it was odd that they put the statue there. But yes, this is sickening that it was vandalized.

Well, there is also a 25' statue of the same thing in San Diego, Ca. There was a lot of controversy from many in the area saying it did not represent "art. But, the statue was placed there anyway. The original statue in San Diego was made out of material that was not too substantial, however it was replaced with a bronze (I believe) statue.
