I think it's the idea of taking a life however small or animal. So sorry but you must have done the right thing.

Probably the fact the cat was a fixture, a part of the household for a period of time. Plus it was your wife's pet & if she loved it, she is probably grieving over it. Pets definitely become a part of the family. There are many pets who need to be adopted at area shelters. When the time is right, see how she feels about going there & adopting another cat.

I am suggesting this because I recently lost mine to cancer & am seriously considering the same thing. Sorry for the loss of your wife's cat.
