My 2nd cousin had open heart surgery this past Wednesday. He had seven by-pass surgeries. One artery was 90% blocked, the doctors said that one was going to be the make or break artery. After the surgery he sat up for a short while and then went to sleep. He has been unresponsive ever since. The hospital has called in a neurologists. Hopefully he is going to respond to the treatment administered by the doctors.

Darren Tooley is his name and he is only 52 years old and has two daughters one is 15 and the other is nine years old.

All prayers are greatly appreciated.

Update: Saturday 9:36 AM - I just got an update a few minutes ago. His mother told me that he woke up for a very short period of time and then went back to sleep. The way she talked he was only awake a few minutes. And said he was very confused and she emphasized "very". The surgery was very early Wednesday morning. In fact, it was the first surgery of the day for that doctor.

Update: Saturday 5:45 PM.I got a very brief update at 5:45 PM. The good news is my cousin is seemingly doing some better. He has been awake and walking down the halls a little bit. So the power of prayer is working. Thanks to everyone that has prayed for my cousin.

Update: Sunday 5:45 PM. I talked to my first cousin (Darren's Mom just now) and she said he was doing pretty well physically although he is not eating. But he is moving around and walking some just like the doctors wanted. She also said that he is somewhat depressed but with what he has been through I would think that would be expected. In addition to his heart problems he also has "sugar" so there were a number of things the doctors had to get under control before they could perform the surgery. That may have played into his depression somewhat.

He has not seen his two daughters since his surgery. Once he sees them I think he will perk up significantly. Because his life has always been centered around his two girls.

UPDATE Monday 10:00 PM - I just got off the phone with his mom and while she didn't get to go to the hospital today (she is in an Assisted Living facility) she said his wife said he was moved out of ICU and into a regular room. He is still in a lot of pain and has a couple of chest tubes still inserted. But we are taking that as a positive sign the very fact that he is no longer in ICU. Thanks for asking!

Again, I want to thank everyone for their support through prayers- I know they are the reason he is responding so well (minus a couple of issues) at this time. Thanks to my fellow GCC friends - of all schools.

Any update?

None since yesterday but thanks very much for asking. I am going to call his mother (my first cousin) today. The ironic thing is his wife is a nurse that works on the same floor where he is a patient. She said that under normal conditions a patient that would have had similar surgery should be up and walking some the 2nd day after the surgery. He sat up some after the surgery but then became unresponsive. It has us all worried sick because his dad died of exactly the same thing AT EXACTLY THE SAME AGE of 52. His dad died on the operating table.

Your continued prayers are GREATLY APPRECIATED.
