Have any of you guys done this? We're looking at this as a possibility for our next trip. We've done Italy but not the northern section via rail. The trains over there are fantastic. I'd like to talk to someone that has done this. Thanks.

Its been 35 years since I did a 15 day Eurorail pass and backpacked much of Europe. I was stationed in southern Italy at the time. I remember Italy had the slowest, worse rail system of all other European countries and stopped at every "one horse" town. Northern Italy rail was a much better system than Southern Italy - much more developed. I'm and sure (certainly hope) it has vastly improved since that time. Regardless, I would still do it again. I loved traveling Europe via rail.

Pre covid I was in Switzerland and Germany every 3-4 months for years. Used Swiss Rail (SBB) out of Zurich every trip and its as good as Deutsche Bahn, just haven't taken it to northern Italy, drove to Milan. The trains are really clean and the system is efficient, I looked and its about a 3:45 trip on Swiss rail from Zurich to Milan. Make sure you do it during the day so you can take in the alps.

If you are looking for a beautiful place to visit, I will recommend you Germany. I've been there recently with my family, and I can tell you that it was worth it. Nature there is gorgeous. And besides that, you can also be impressed with the beauty of the local architecture. So I will recommend you to visit this country. If my message got you excited, I could leave you the website from where I bought the train tickets. Here it is: https://www.dbauskunft.net/de/. If you decide to visit Germany, share with us your thoughts about this country after the trip.

We did it in a sleeper over night. Didn’t get to see anything. Have fun.
