OT: Well all you NASCAR folks (I'm an old-schooler myself, but stopped back right when Earnhardt died & Awesome Bill from Dawsonville retired), it...

looks like the official End Date is merely only a couple of years away now.

Seriously, who the heck ya gonna root for once this officially "kicks-in" and becomes the official racing style...

Self-driving race cars zip into history at CES

Just had to ask after surfin' up on that article.

That's NOT Nascar racing, and won't be. While I don't follow Nascar like I use to, I would watch one of these "races" and then never again.

I stopped watching after all the greats left, Pearson, Elliot, Petty, Earnhart, Baker, Yarborough, Allison, etc. Pearson's brother lived up the street when I was growing up.....he had tons of stories.

The indistinguishible cars finally did it. It was no longer Ford v. Chevy or Chevy v. Dodge....they were just all the same.

And you and I have the EXACT same feelings regarding NASCAR!! I used to have classes with Cale Yarborough's daughter back in my days at Carolina! She and I also worked at the State Senate for a few semesters back in 87-88!!

It would be interesting to see how “clean” they run each other at the short tracks or if there is a “big one” at Daytona and Talladega lol. Will they have robots for pit crew too?

I followed NASCAR faithfully, rarely missing a race, by radio in the 70s and TV in the 80s and 90s, usually attending 4-5 races a year. I quit watching about 2004. My grandfather’s farm and my father’s farm were both within 3 miles of Earnhardt’s Garage-Mahal in Iredell County.

NASCAR lost its rabid audience when it abandoned so many tracks in the south. Now they try gimmicks. The Rogul, hauling dirt into Bristol, constantly changing the championship rules, Danica (if they wanted a woman, pick one that can drive, but I understand they went for the pretty one), etc. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they raced cars driven by “drivers” with joysticks on the roofs or whatever. They are desperate to save themselves from themselves.

I'll still watch a little NASCAR sometimes, but it has become too bland and corporatized. What I mean by corporatized is not all the ads on the cars, but the blandness and lack of personality in the sport nowadays. Sure, a guy like Kyle Busch might add a little excitement, but overall it's not as good as it used to be.

when did stock car racing become NASCAR? Seems like it has gone downhill ever sense.

I was big in to NASCAR many years ago. Mostly the Winston Cup days. It was a combination of things that caused me to lose interest.
First a lot of my favorite drivers retired. Many of these guys drove but also had other jobs like working farms, construction, etc. Guys I could relate to.

Second, most tracks started prohibiting long standing traditions in the infield when it came to fans camping. They went to reserved parking and packing cars and trucks in like sardines which meant no more this and that.. fires, scaffolding, gas grills, etc.

Third, they started closing several southern tracks I really enjoyed in the name of progress.

Fourth, rule changes on the track like the whole segments thing. Really?

Fifth, I had a lot of friends who were also fans and this had always been a sport that was best watched with friends. Problem is their interest has wained too.

To be honest, knowing what I know of how it was makes it very difficult to enjoy it today. Plus I cant really point to a driver I'd relate to.

Count me in as one who doesn’t watch anymore. Last race I went to was at Charlotte and it was so boring we left halfway through and went and shot pool.

They ruined it by redesigning the car. Now it’s just like watching traffic, not racing.

I happened to catch an old 1987 race on tv the other day. They were interviewing Davie Allison and he mentioned all the drivers had a "gentleman's agreement" on a paticular issue. Man that was something I hadn't heard in a long time. Is that still a thing? Anyone heard that term used lately? Just curious

I used to go to several races - Bristol, Darlington, Charlotte. Earnhardt's death hurt for sure, but a combination of the 'Car of Tomorrow" that homogenized the cars, the lack of real "personalities" and the proliferation of those cookie-cutter 1.5 mile tracks made me lose interest years ago.

It's sad - it was a uniquely Southern sport with a rich history, colorful drivers, crew chiefs and team owners, and a knowledgeable, fun, and extremely loyal fanbase.

They ruined it by moving to larger venues for money. Now they just try and cram Bubba Wallace down your throat. I tune in every so often to see if he's crashed and if I still recognize any drivers. I'm a former Earnhardt and Earnhardt Jr fan. It was fun to have someone to pull for.

If NASCAR wanted to push inclusion and promote those of different races/cultures, etc., why didn’t they choose Kyle Larson, an Asian American? Would of looked good for them since he is the reigning champion.

I wish some of these guys with money, like DE Jr. and Tony Stewart, would start a southern series and run cars off the showroom floor. Let them doctor the engines but not the body style. May could get North Wilkesboro, Rockingham and some of these others tracks back. I believe it would be supported.

Just curious, but should that include foreign cars as well, or only 'mairikin?? Just curious.

I've watched 2 minutes of nascar the last 17 years. The 2 minutes was because I was changing the batteries in my remote that happened to stop on that when they died.

Question: Drone racing, drivers coming with joysticks instead of racing suits and helmets. In the next hundred years will we see esports take over everything? Robots playing football and basketball and such? No injuries to humans except thumbs and it can be inclusive - don’t matter if you worked to get in shape, or what race or sexuality you are, etc. The operators will maybe become like the robots themselves, like the Car of Tomorrow. Glad I’ll be gone.

I miss JR
He ran in a nationwide race in the last season or2020. I watched.

life lessons always remember what brought you to this moment

Have never liked racing and have never watched, but I grew to appreciate NASCAR as something of a conservative outpost in the sports world. Guess that’s no longer the case though.
