Has anyone ever stayed at any decent hotels around Winterplace Ski Resort in WV. I've searched the internet and have found a couple of options (Skyline Resort and Resort at Glade Springs, but I'm looking for first hand knowledge.
Thanks.

Stay away! Especially on the weekends. Hands down the most crowded ski resort I've ever been to. One Saturday, I got a grand total of 4 runs in, in SIX hours.

We are skiing Wed through Friday so that should help with the crowds. I didn't choose Winterplace, I'm going with others that did. Where did you stay?

Wed-Fri at Winterplace should be a great time.

Try this site out: http://slopesidechalets.com/ We have used them before many times. The condos midway up the mountains are nice too.

You should be able to find plenty at www.vrbo.com. Good luck!!

Tear it up!

I have done several trips with youth to Winterplace and Glades is the best place. If the weather is not good for skiing, there are plenty of options for things to do. We stayed slopeside this past year and while convenient, not the best place and we have stayed at hotels which is what any hotel is. I suggest and recommend Glades.

We stayed at skyline between Christmas and New Years for 3 nights. Refurbished and you can tell but we thoroughly enjoyed it, right at the ski resort, great bar food (esp wings), room clean and spacious and everything worked. Nice staff. Worth the rate of $80/night in my view

I usually get there for a couple days once per ski season. Its the biggest around within several hours drive, but is still subject to east coast weather and icy snow a lot of the time.

We always stay at a hotel down in Princeton WV for cost reasons and just drive up to Winterplace. I think its about 12 miles up to the Flat Top exit from Princeton.

On the Flat Top exit there is really only one hotel. Its called the Knights Inn in Ghent. There is really nothing else there for food except for the Exxon gas station witha Subway and PIzza Hut pizza place right inside the gas station on the other side of the exit.
Thats why we stay down in Princeton, so we can at least get a decent meal after a day of skiing.

FYI, last march we went to Colorado to ski for the first time ever and it has ruined east coast skiing. For comparison, Winterplace is 227 acres. The resort we visited last year in CO was 3100 acres, and there are about 8 within a 1.5 hour drive that are that big and larger with one exception being an 1800 acre place. Its amazing. Even on a crowded day, people are spread out all over.

Yep, Colorado will ruin skiing for easterners, especially southerners! We're going to get a scaled down taste and probably the best on the east coast a week from Friday with a trip to Stowe, VT, can't wait!

If you're going to bother going to Winterplace, might as well at least go a little farther to Snowshoe. Like others have said, Colorado is great. For the price of a plane ticket, you can be in Breckenridge in the time it will take to drive to Snowshoe. You will get A LOT more skiing done in Colorado and it's WAY easier for a beginner. The slopes are a lot wider to allow you to ski across a lot more instead of worrying about turning so much. Highly recommend it.

Thanks for all of the great info. Yeah, I'd rather be out west or at least Snowshoe, but that's not an option this year. I'm just along for the ride. Y'all can expect an OT post from me with questions about out skiing out west for next year. Thanks, Again.

I lived in Bluefield and am not aware of any good motels near Winterplace.

Beckley which is to the south on I77 used to have a few decent motels and restaurants.

Beckley is north of winterplace bout 15 mies. Princeton is outh of winterplace abutv5 miles. Both havea little town with several hotels and some places to eat. We used o stay in Berkeley because of the delicious pancake house near the interstate. But ihop bought it out. Thre is a. Toll road pay location between Buckley and winterplace so it just started making more nice to stay in Princeton.

Try Winterhaven condos, probably very reasonable midweek through vrbo or homeaway. They say 3 BR but one is a small bunk room with bunk beds, all slopeside with nice views of the ski area.

CCU,
How are the roads from glade springs to the ski slopes? Is it a pain getting back and forth to ski? Thanks.

I took my daughter skiing a few years ago and stayed at Glade Springs. I would recommend it. They have a few restaurants there at the facility that are pretty good, bowling, arcade, and a movie room/theater if I remember correctly. They also have a shuttle that makes a run every 15 minutes to the slopes, so we mostly just used that, but they will keep the roads clear for you I'm sure if you prefer to drive.
