Hello everyone and happy Monday! Let's get this analytics thread started! A lot of my info will be updated in this post (Including PFF grades for all starters and SP+ numbers). If you have any specific questions, drop them below!
SP+ Numbers
Overall- 34th (+8.6 points over average team on neutral field, 8th in SEC) +2 spots over preseason
Offense- 76th (26.8 points expected, 10th in SEC) +5 spots over preseason
Defense- 20th (18.1 expected points allowed, 4th in SEC) -6 spots from preseason
-- Tennessee had a 76% expected post game win percentage based on efficiency, explosiveness, field position, havoc plays (Basically pressures + pass deflections) and turnover luck. SC was specifically hurt in the field position and turnover luck categories.
-- SP+ loves Tennessee's defense, so a good offensive showing has SC climbing the rankings. Tennessee was a projected 4-point winner and needed some turnover luck help to get to that exact margin.
PFF Grade/Stat Notes
-- Collin Hill graded exceptionally well, especially between the hashes. He was 21 of 26 with 245 yards, a touchdown and two drops on throws across the middle, grading at 80+ across all four levels (-0 yards from LOS, 0-10 yards, 10-20 yards and 20+ yards). His PFF grade was actually higher than Mississippi State's KJ Costello's (Largely due to Mike Leach's air raid system). It was the highest PFF grade for a Gamecock QB since Jake Bentley's 85 against Ole Miss in 2018.
-- The offensive tackles allowed 9 pressures, interior line allowed two and Deshaun Fenwick allowed one.
-- Shi Smith lined up in the slot on 47 of 63 snaps. I personally like that, as it allows him to work where he's best. It doesn't seem he will be pushed to the outside simply because he the no. 1 guy.
-- South Carolina is graded 17th nationally in the passing game (Sixth among P5s), and 15th in rushing, one of only four P5s to have passing and rushing grades above 75.
-- Jaycee Horn was targeted twice with no completions allowed. Dating back to Week 8 of last year, Horn has allowed just 12 of 25 targets to be caught for 107 yards (73.2 passer rating against. He has allowed less than 25 yards receiving in 9 of his last 13 games.
-- JJ Enagbare had eight stops (Tackles that constitute an unsuccessful play for the offense) Saturday. This puts his 18th among all P5 players and 1st among players that have played one game. He's also the only player in the country ranked in the top 20 in both pass rush productivity (11.5- four pressures, two sacks on 25 pass rush snaps) and run stop % (five stops on 27 rush snaps)
-- Parker White hit two more field goals Saturday. Dating back to last season, he has hit 12 straight from any distance and 19 of his last 20 inside of 48 yards. As far as I can tell, he is now the most accurate kicker in school history from inside of 48 yards.
-- Very small sample size, but Jordan Burch lined up outside of the tight end on six of seven snaps. Seems like that's where they want him.
-- South Carolina got pressure on 16 of 35 passes, a fairly good number. The secondary's coverage numbers weren't bad, but the tackling numbers (Seven missed tackles in 22 attempts) were atrocious.
-- Freshmen who played meaningful snaps and any relevant numbers: Jordan Burch (7 snaps, run stop), Tonka Hemingway (10 snaps: six at 7-tech, four at 5-tech, two hurries and a tackle), Rico Powers (5 snaps)
