Simone Biles pulls out of the team competition. It's unknown at this point if she will compete in the individual events.

I bet she retires after this Olympics.
She's 24 so that's about time most female gymnast retire. Depending on how this all plays out, it wouldn't surprise me if she comes back in 3 years for a redemption tour or at the very least come in as a specialist. Barring an injury or a mental lapse like today she could probably still win a Gold in at least 3 events in 2024 without changing a thing.

Heard it was a mental issue, not physical.
That evidently is some of the rumors. From her former teammates, Raismen (sic) and Hernandez, the new team is looking to her to carry them and its putting a ton of pressure on her. Each of her old teammates could handle their own....not sure her current ones are as confident.

Who really knows? When you start talking about stuff like mental strain, it's hard to know if undue pressure is really being placed on her or if she simply perceives that undue pressure is being put on her. Either way, I hope she can finish strong, whether it's in this olympics or the next.

If there’s undue pressure team-wise, that’s on the coach.
If it’s a personal undue pressure, I’m sure her being in every commercial isn’t helping calm her down. Just look at what happened with LOLO Jones. She went from the favorite to win the triathlon to not even medaling. She was THAT Olympics media/ commercial darling.

I know she's getting a lot of heat for the move, but sometimes it's best to remove yourself if you know you're going to be a detriment to the team. Especially in sport like gymnastics, where if your head is not in the right place you risk serious injuries and huge deductions that could leave the team off the podium.
I'm sure this decision wasn't taken lightly, given that she is usually so mentally rock solid and one of the most dominant athletes in her sport. Really hopes she can turn it back on in the following days

It was for a mental issue. I know this is very critical, but the “GOATS” don’t do that. She invited all of that pressure by anointing herself that to the point of getting a goat tattoo.
You mean like Phelps in the 400 I.M. in the 2012 Olympics?

It happens to everyone.

Phelps raced and got beat. He didn’t quit. Everyone loses…not everyone gets crushed by the pressure to the point of not competing. Sorry, the athletes in the “GOAT” conversation compete. This would be like Brady sitting out the Super Bowl.

I hope she’s alright and this might have been what is best for her. But the tattoo was premature and came off as fairly arrogant.

Says the weight of carrying everyone's hopes has taken an emotional toll on her. I could see that.
Absolutely. I’m sure that’s exactly what she felt. But in a team event, she should realize that she couldn’t win it on her own and maybe deflected some of that attention rather than seek it. I’m sure she’ll learn from it.

Now that the team competition is done, maybe she’ll come out swinging for individuals.

You don’t get to where she is without being mentally tough - being at the top of the gymnast game that long (or any length of time) takes amazing mental fortitude on a literal daily basis. I’ll bet she comes back - or at least I hope she does.

Perhaps she should have turned down the team slot.

If she does individuals now, it's going to seem very selfish.

"This Olympic Games I wanted it to be for myself," Biles said fighting back tears. "I came in and felt like I was still doing it for other people. That just hurts my heart that doing what I love has been kind of taken away from me to please other people."

Osaka blamed stress for her loss today also. The new athlete. So many, many distractions.

But how much time does she have left to be the world's premier gymnast?

Before a competition? Sure.

In the middle of a competition? No way.

Perhaps this is the reason for the pressure she feels. She is not being given adequate credit for the difficulty of her routine because no one else can do what she can.

There isn’t objective scoring in gymnastics so there is no way to truly tell if she’s being undervalued or not. It’s literally a judgment call on every aspect.

It’s the new generation. Statistics show this. They spend more time in front of screens than in front of real people. Their value doesn’t come from real relationships but approval from social media. Nobody can live up to that.

Pulling out of a competition during the competition for stress certainly impacts her legacy. Nothing can take away what she has accomplished. But this will always be remembered when her name comes up.

What the does Phelps losing an event have to do with someone quiting on her team (b/c of mental reasons)? How can you proclaim to be "the goat", and then be so mentally weak you quit.

One wears a goat on their uniform...one is actually the goat.
Hint: "the goat"is the one with 23 gold medals, not the one with 4.

I hope not but I won't be surprised if she did. She stated in an interview the other day that she now feels aches and pains after leaving practice that she never felt before. Plus, she stated that she feels the "weight of the world on her shoulders". Simone also said earlier in her career she never doubted her ability but now she does worry about making a mistake.

The Women’s Technical Committee defended their decision, citing “the risk, the safety of the gymnasts and the technical direction of the discipline.”

“There is added risk in landing of double saltos for beam dismounts (with/without twists), including a potential landing on the neck,” they wrote.

Its also in the NYT.

Five Olympic versus 1. And Phelps was favored to win that event and didn't even make it to the stand. The longevity of a swimmer is greater than a gymnast.

Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history and has 4 elements named after her, and should add another this Olympics. That is more than any gymnast ever. She is without a doubt the greatest gymnast of all time.

Phelps made the olympics as a 15 year old and you're trying to count that against him. lol
I'm guessing Biles wasn't good enough to make the olympics team at 15?

With out a doubt Phelps>>>>>>Biles

Biles is probably the best female gymnast ever I will give you than, though. Even if she is mentally weak.
