Per the university, there will be a ceremony before Friday's baseball game to retire Kip Bouknight's jersey. Bouknight won the 2000 Golden Spikes award and still holds the school records for inning pitched and stirkeouts in a career.

His jersey or his number? Retirement of jerseys means nothing.

Honest question because I don’t know. - how many have been retired ? Has USC retired a lot of Jerseys? I’m guessing it’s a big deal for Kip and probably Tanner too.

We and others have retired a few numbers in the past - in various sports. That's the way it ought to be done. That's true homage. Now they retire "jerseys" instead so that he can promise those numbers to snot-nosed kids. It's a sham, no more meaningful than retiring a jockstrap that the school supplied a player.

Moreover, regarding Pirate great, Dick Groat, who died today and who played college basketball at Duke.

Groat, who was from the Swissvale neighborhood just east of Pittsburgh's downtown, starred at Duke in basketball and baseball in the early 1950s, earning All-American honors in both. His No. 10 jersey hangs inside Cameron Indoor Stadium after the program retired his number following his senior season in 1952.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done.

We retired #11. As we should have.

We should also retire Tom Owens’ number.

I agree with King, retiring a jersey is a nothing burger.

So what that they aren't retiring his number. They are recognizing him for accomplishments. Too bad everything somebody does has to be criticized by a couple of bitter old men. "get off my lawn!!!!" Have a great weekend, and make sure you show up when anyone recognizes you.

I understand the debate of retiring # vs Jersey on message boards but don’t agree with one meaning nothing. One is a bigger honor but both are great accomplishments.
Kip had a great career . There were some great team members on the team. I didn’t realize he had 12 or so complete games. That is pretty big time. Even for that era of baseball.

Go Gamecocks. Hope we can finish strong and have a few younger guys to step up when needed .

People are too inclined to settle for an inferior option. There's no sense in it when the superior precedent has already been enacted. Retiring jerseys is thus rendered a diminishment of the honor. Any keen critical thinker can see it. The honor has been downgraded.

Taking a shot at our age, wow. The "get off my lawn" quote was a nice touch. You left out "Grandpa".

I am 58 years old. I think it's great that they are honoring one of our distinguished former players. I dont care as much about the semantics of retiring his jersey or number. He's a Gamecock homer and I like it. I'm sure if we look hard enough we can find something to be critical in just about everything.

Like King said, it diminishes the retiring of a number. It's a half banner type of deal.
