recruiting a new coach for next season.

I know this may sound rash but we have to face reality. Our football program is on a downward spiral and is not going to get any better anytime soon. This season is going to get worse and worse.

Thus, if Spurrier would announce his retirement, it would open the door for hope for hiring a quality coach who could start building up the program.

Otherwise, the program is going to get driven down so far that it will take many years just to get back to a level of mediocrity.

Now is the time for Ray Tanner to "suggest" that Spurrier should retire and start working on getting a good coach in here for next season..

This would allow Spurrier to exit with some dignity and also hopefully keep our football program from going into complete mediocrity or worse.

Haha yiu think tanner has the backbone to do that?
Not sure. This is when Tanner will show whether he is a good AD or not.

I feel his lack of doing anything about Chad Holbrook was the first strike against Tanner. His same inability to deal with Spurrier would be strike number two with strike three hanging over his head.

Not sure they do either. Tanners in a hard spot football and baseball program on the decline and he has so hard choices to make. Time to make them or no point in him sitting around collecting a salary.

It is what it is.

We're gonna throw it around, see what happens.

Just got to coach 'em up better.

He ain't going until he decides.

Spurrier doesn't want to go out a loser but he even more doesn't want to go out a humiliated loser.

He will have to decide if he wants to cut his loses and get out now, after two bad seasons or hang around and get out after multiple bad seasons. Then, he will be the ultimate loser who proved he could not be a winner.

Or tanner coukd find a spine and tell spurrier to go. Spurrier can't decide how he woukd like to go out that's tanners job.

Completely agree. I really appreciate what Spurrier has done for us, but we haven't been beaten that badly in a long time. Even worse coming off a loss to Kentucky.

Right now, we need to accept the reality that we're one of the WORST teams in the SEC. And Spurrier can't do anything about it.

I agree.

However, it would be better for everyone if Spurrier would retire now so it does not become an issue for Tanner or the fans.

I like Spurrier and think he has been great for our program. However, it has become painfully clear that his effective days as a head coach are on the decline. I want him to get out while he has some dignity left.

I don't disagree, but on the flip side tanner needs to know what his job is. Your 1st hire for baseball is failing and now your football program is declining. It's time to stop fundraising and do your job.

Although I respect CSS and acknowledge his greatness as a coach I agree that a change is necessary unless things change in a hurry. The good news is that USC is a premium job and there are many great coaches who would be interested in the job. Off the top of my head I'd look at the following candidates.
1 Mark Hudspeth- HC ULL
2. Bud Foster DC VA Tech
3.Ruffin Mc Neil HC ECU
4Justin Fuentes HC Memphid

I fully agree.

Plus, there is no outside factors that can be blamed for the decline of our football program. It has become evident that this is not a slump; it is a downward spiral and there is nothing to indicated anything is going to improve next season. It is time for fresh blood before it's too late.

If Tanner "convinces" Spurrier to leave (I'll believe it when I see it), Spurrier will retire. We won't be firing him-or at least it won't be announced that way.

Now, we will find out if Tanner really knows how to do his new job.

I completely agree that Spurrier will not be fired. He will retire with great fanfare as a hero. I firmly believe he is smart enough to know it is better to cut his losses and get out now rather than being totally humiliated as a complete loser.

We go after a new coach it's got to be a winner that can recruit and win I'm thinking more about Kirby smart I know mark dantonio ain't the greatest recruiter but he sure is a winner

I will leave this to Ray Tanner to make the best hire. This is why he gets paid the big bucks!

No... Strike 1 was not forcing Spurrier to fire ward Adams and botkin last year.
Strike 2 was Holbrook.
Strike 3 is,this, football season if he does nothing.

Rays track record for good hires isn't good. He's 0-1 which is the biggest issue.
We lost the best baseball coach in the nation and gained a dismal AD at the same time when we hired him.

It's not that we suck its how quickly we got to the suck and nothing being done about it.

Both the AD hire and his baseball replacement were "emotional" hires which are rarely ever work out well.

Ray's job has been easy so far-handing out extensions, raises and keeping current coaches happy. Time to earn his keep. An AD is truly judged by fires and hires.

Absolutely!!!!
This is when we see Tanners metal.

Yes but the SEC revenue helps blind it.
While SEC revenue helps hide the issues here, ultimately the drop off in local donations will hurt.

All other SEC schools are getting the same money we are. When their donor money far exceeds ours, they will continue to pass us up.

Now, if we are okay just being a bottom level SEC team and taking the SEC money, that will work for a while. However, at some point the fans will demand better.

Basketball is slowly improving I think. I have my main issues with football and baseball.
I agree that basketball is slowly improving. However, it has so far to go that even the minor improvements don't mean that much in the big picture. I just don't see us becoming a top 10 team anytime in the near or even distant future.

Fundraising is part of the job, and the next staff and raising the recruiting budget will cost a pant-load.

When Tanner took (snared) the AD job, I was happy that we had promoted from within and we did with a proven winner ( 2 NC's and 1 runner-up). However, when the warm and fuzzy euphoria wore off, I remembered saying to my self, 'Wait! Hold it! We have just promoted one of our most successful coaches ever, OUT of his coaching position and filled the top job in the AD with a NOVICE? Something's wrong with this equation. This is (on its face) something really dumb - something that the 'old' Carolina would do - not the enlightened, pragmatic Carolina of the 21st century' . . . but we did.

We've got to get smarter, folks. We've got some of the best ass-kickin' alumni and business programs right here in Columbia, SC. So, let's go kick some ass OR slink back into the hen house where the hens won't even give us the time of day . . . or anything else for that matter.
