I heard on the radio this morning that when SOS was at a gala last night, and someone asked him what he thought about Clemson, he responded, "They had the #1 defense in the country. I tell you, if we had that #1 defense in the country, we'd have more to show for it than a Russell Athletic Bowl trophy."

Ouch. I'm glad he's chirping, because when he does, he really likes what he sees, but...that #1 defense kept us at bay last season. Just figured I'd post this for some pre-Friday entertainment.

Love it! Hilarious dig and I'm sorry, one Tater win in 6 years does not provide immunity from Steve's barbs. Keep it up, coach.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I don't get it. Didn't they play in a bowl in Orlando?

I don't mind if Spurrier and dabo both talk a little smack it's no big deal.

We don't even know if the quote was correct. It he said Independence Bowl instead of Russell Athletic Bowl then it takes on an entirely different meaning.

But assuming it's correct I'm of the opinion that these barbs have jumped the shark. They fall rather flat when you're making them from a weak hand, getting beat and out-recruited at the same time.

Recruiting doesn't matter, winning matters

I prefer where SOS does his talking on the field. As poorly as he coached last season, and as poorly as his team played, and as poorly as his recruiting has been the past few years, (and especially the large number of decommitments this year), SOS ought to STFU.

Wasn't there a credible post a few months ago stating Tanner had to talk SOS into not quitting after the season? He's acting like a petulant child.

I don't get where he has audacity to shoot off his mouth.

He can shoot off his mouth because he is SOS and can back it up more often then not. He can shoot off his mouth because he is the best coach ever at the University of South Carolina and has set the bar for those who will follow. You act like you dont even know who this man is and where his personality came from. He needs to STFU and he's a petulant child? You should take your own advice. Really

Old ball coach trash talks more than any 6-6 coach in history, particularly considering that he has not won anything big since the '90s.

Spurrier's schtick is old and worn out (a lot like him).

Thank you for the correction....

For some reason, I thought they played for the national championship with all their 14 players being drafted in the NFL...

You mean if Tater. I will say Taters are the better team IF it happens. But you have lost everyone on D pretty much. Oh I know you recruited well. That was gonna be your answer. Your D will not nearly be as good as last year. But because you only have to play well in 3-4 games because of that weak schedule, probably doesnt matter.

If our team had the number one defense in the country, the Gamecocks might have played in the national championship game. The comment may have been directed at Clemson, but it says more about our defense than Clemson's offense to me. Given our team's performance last year, Spurrier should keep his mouth shut and let the team's play speak for itself.

It's the football equivalent of "give me the Glengarry leads and I can outsell Ricky Roma".
