Straw Poll On Mask Rules

I’m guessing that everyone who is concerned about mask mandates are also upset over seat belt laws, banning of flavored vapes, places banning smoking, drugs being illegal and open container laws.

While I absolutely agree that some of the lock down stuff was ridiculous the masks are the least of the issues from the COVID response.
I've worn a mask, but not because of any mandate. Those other things you mentioned are ridiculous when applied to mentally competent adults. You can also include bigamy and prostitution to the list. Of course, a private entity should be free to apply those rules to its property.

Since last March, I’ve worn a mask if I’m not in my house or in my car. Hasn’t hurt me a bit. I don’t get why some people are so bent out of shape about it. “Damn government can’t tell ME what to do!” Yeah, tell that to a cop the next time you get pulled for speeding.

Last week a friend had a repairman come to her house. She asked him to wear a mask and he refused so she kicked him out. Her house, her rules. He then texted her and cussed her out. WTF is wrong with people??? Is he that much of a wuss that he can’t wear a damn mask for 30 minutes?

BTW, in the past year I haven’t been sick. No seasonal flu, no cold, nothing. The mask and washing hands have made this my healthiest year ever.

You could get your nose only Covid mask for eating and drinking.

Well, I have some issues that makes it very difficult to wear a mask. In fact I cant wear one but I can wear a bandana for 15 mins or so if it's not too hot out. So for the last year, about the only places I have been is the grocery store, the drug store and the occasional fastfood drivethu. What I dont want to hear is that I need to continue living the way I have been as a courtesy to others after I have been vaccinated. I'll be considered fully vaccinated in 10 days.
But the collective mindset is that everyone should suffer equally. When one group refuses to suffer they become the targets of scorn by those who prefer to suffer obediently.

I've got an idea. Why don't we al live like the boy in the bubble. That way, we don't have to worry about any pathogens or being exposed to any environmental hazards. And, so we don't offend anyone, we can have our social media scrubbed by detectors of truth - wait, we're already doing that, nevermind. We'll, there's life and there's living. Put me down for the latter. I know there will be holier than thou, altruistic responses to this so I'll add fuel to that fire. I know there are people who wear the mask to protect others i.e. immunocompromised, etc, but the vast majority don't think for themselves, are afraid of the virus, and afraid of dying. So, I'm calling BS on the most who say they wear it for others. It's human nature to protect number one and that's what you're attempting to do.

Speeding is a real law. Wearing a mask is a mandate enforced by local government without the usual legislation. I agree with you about "my house, my rules". However, a fully vaccinated person poses no risk of COVID. It takes prolonged close contact, generally with a symptomatic person, to spread this thing. It has been widely debunked that it's being passed on surfaces. In other words, stay out of others' personal space and you should be fine. Healthy people can do themselves a real disservice by not being exposed to any viruses. Other viruses will come along and their immunity will be weaker.

Having said all this, I wore my mask because others wanted me to. I'm done now that I'm vaccinated. If anyone asks, I'll just tell them I'm vaccinated and if it bothers them to see me maskless they're welcome to stay out of my space.

Does your friend wear a mask in her house all the time? If not, he should charge her for the visit anyway.

When it comes to people with health issues and young children whom there are no studies on the long term effects of masking that I know of, the collective mindset assumes too much... probably because they are not a member of those groups. Breaks my heart to see my 6 year old granddaughter red in the face when she takes her mask off after wearing it a while. This wouldnt be the first time I've been at odds with the collective mindset.

Maybe I’m reading this wrong but I would absolutely agree with including bigamy and prostitution into the argument about your “individual” liberties. There are tons of others that could be included as well but I just picked a few that people just seem to accept. You not wearing a seatbelt doesn’t impact anyone but you yet those laws are in effect across the country. Why shouldn’t businesses be allowed to decide if they want to allow smoking or not? If they want to then the customer simply has to decide whether they want to visit somewhere that allows smoking or look for another alternative. Why shouldn’t I as a passenger in a car not be allowed to drink a beer or as someone of legal age simply be allowed to enjoy a beer anywhere I chose? No one cares if I walk down the street drinking a coke but a beer could be a crime.

Why should a mentally competent adult not be able to buy flavored vapes but they can buy flavored cigars?

You're a libertarian, so buckle your seat belt (pun intended), because society in this country is running fast toward socialism and total control of what the populace says and does. If you don't comply, you will be punished by both the government and members of the population in general who think it is their responsibility to keep you in line.

I actually agree with this. The problem is that most people that think people should be able to make all their own choices don't think that they should be responsible for dealing with the consequences of those choices. For instance, many think someone should be able to do hard drugs if they choose, but when those same folks become dysfunctional to the point that they can't provide for themselves, they think the government should tax other people to care for them. When someone has 5 kids with no dad to support them, they expect others to fund their bad life choices.

As a conservative, I'm perfectly fine with letting people make their own choice and keeping the government out of their day to day lives when their decisions affect only themselves. Have at it. Just don't expect me to pay to fix all the issues that come from it.

It's called culling the herd in other species.

The reality is everybody wants some government control. We are a nation of laws, and elected officials in government create those laws and the government enforces those laws. How much control is the question.

I personally draw the line WAY BEFORE they LITERALLY CONTROL HOW I BREATHE.

The non peer reviewed pre print referenced above is not even talking about the vaccine. Further, “the mRNA (in the case of the RNA-based vaccine) will remain in the cytoplasm and will not enter into the nucleus, where the host DNA resides. And importantly, humans do not have the required reverse transcriptase (that is usually encoded by retroviral viruses) to actually reverse transcribe the RNA into DNA for its genomic incorporation...”
Come on man, don’t go bringing all that science fact in here. It’s just too intelligent for these Neanderthals that just want to act like modern medicine is some mixture of alchemy, voo doo, and the devil blended together. It’s ridiculous!

y’all remember the asteroid movie deep impact? The part they got wrong about the end of time event was that they showed people running when the tsunami came.

the sad reality is half the people would be sitting on the beach sun bathing yelling, “this beach is public and it’s my right to be here,”. “There is no asteroid,”. “It’s all fiction, the government trying to control me and limit my movements until I accept communism.”

give me a break you morons! You not wearing a mask is a giant **** You to your fellow man and woman who isn’t yet eligible for a shot, can’t take one due to allergic reactions, or hasn5 yet gotten their scheduled shot due to backlog.

it’s ridiculous and I’m sick of it.

in the 80s and 90s when a store said no shirt no shoes no service, you put on a shirt and shoes and went shopping or got the hell out of the store. Shopping is not a right, it’s a privilege they let you in.

Wrong.

Pushing air out and pulling air in through a mask is different than without a mask. You breathe differently with a mask on than you do without.

They are literally controlling how you breathe.

Governments were originally created to take care of services that were not suited to provision by the private sector - military, highways. It's evolved into much more.

Wearing a mask is not really a sacrifice. It's about the simplest thing you can do to slow the spread and is a minor inconvenience. I don't see it as some American existential crisis. I assume you're alluding to critical thinking, which is ironic, because that is about the last thing I think of when I see people that show their butts and refuse to follow guidelines recommended by literal experts.

And I'm not even mask Nazi or whatever, but the stubbornness I've seen in the past year from so many "patriots" has been embarrassing. Everyone can see the different set of rules or standards for masks, and I laugh when I watch coaches wear them on TV, but the cynicism has been disappointing. Socially distancing and wearing a mask is quite easy, and you have tons of people unwilling to do that to save others and get back to normal. It's absolutely ironic. And then those people refuse the vaccine. I don't get it.
False patriotism. With freedom comes responsibility.

Good for your friend. When the appointment was set, did she advise the repairman at that time that she required that a mask be worn inside her home?

Unless she always wore a mask in her home, she is a hypocrite. And I don't believe for a second that she was sitting around in her own home wearing a mask all the time.

Remember, masks don't protect you. They supposedly, to some degree, prevent you from ejecting as much virus and infecting others. So, she was fine with him coming in to repair something and suck in her unfiltered pie hole exhaust that she had been ejecting without a mask for days, yet she demand that he protect her.

Works both way.

There's no doubt that wearing a mask can have negative impact on the wearer's health. If you can't feel it immediately, simply try to exercise in it and check again. Now imagine that impact at constant, low levels if you wore it for significant time each day.

With that said and even though you can make a compelling argument either way over whether it has any impact at all on COVID itself, wearing one seems appropriate until all of the higher risk have been vaccinated.

That opportunity has already long since been offered to high risk candidates. They have had the opportunity to protect themselves. If they choose not to do so, they shouldn't expect others to change their lives permanently to protect them, no matter how much of an inconvenience people might consider it to be.

Maybe so. Good to know. I haven't kept up with the rollout.

Unless you have severe COPD wearing a mask does not impede your breathing nor are there inherent risks from breathing in a mask. I completely get that mentally it can seem like it is doing something when you obsess over wearing it and yes I know that TikTok says you get CO2 poisoning but that isn’t true either. Thousands of people wear masks all day every day and have for years and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a single cause of death listed anywhere as “wearing a mask”.

Respectfully disagree. I'm a co-owner in a restaurant and we've had several people who have had to quit due to the symptoms associated with wearing a mask. They average anywhere from $200-350 a shift even during COVID and most had been with us for years. Trouble breathing, ear and nose issues, bad skin breakouts on the face, etc.

Just curious but did any of them file unemployment claims?

They did. But I personally witnessed issues they were having. Also, they are now receiving a fraction of what they were previously. And they were all good people who would have preferred to stay on.
I am convinced a lot more people's lives have been adversely affected by mask mandates than most people realize. I wish your employees well and hope they can get back soon.

I've said it before in another thread like this, but as to the mask wearing, there has been way too much "It's not a problem for me, so it's not a problem for you" and aren't actually listening to valid reasons why they have problems wearing a mask. There are too many assumptions that it's politically motivated. Yes, some are, but not all.

I, for one, have had to work on severe anxiety issues I have when both my nose and mouth are covered at the same time, especially for an extended period of time. It's why I can't snorkle or scuba dive. Add in the heat we have here in Spring/Summer/Fall (months not named January), and it gets bad for me.
