Did you know that 18 US presidents were slave owners and the ones with the most were George Washington and Thomas Jefferson? I guess we should remove George Washington's likeness from the $1 bill and the millions of other things named after him including many African-Americans. Even Ulysses S. Grant and his wife owned 5 slaves. We simply cannot remove everything that offends people because of some of the things they did. No, actually lets not. Im tired of this he was a racist shit. He helped as many people of color as he did whites. He was caught in an era where reelection was the tied to the popular opinion of the time. Unless you actually lived it, you have no clue. He was not by any stretch a perfect man nor human being. But he helped more South Carolinians than he personally hurt. You cant change the past, not correct the deficiencies by trying to remove the memory. The only way is forward. The only way forward is correcting our foolish mistakes, by remembering where we've been. Empathy, love, respect, and above all forgiveness. Make it stick. Dont just agree and say it. No one is disputing that Thurmond was a racist during much of his life, so were 75% of White Southerners in those days. Holding these people to today's standards is bullshit. Just like EVERY Human in history there are parts of Thurmond's life that are regrettable, and others that are exemplary. He did some things that were downright disgraceful, and other things that did wonders for SC.

It's not about comparing today's standards to what happened back then. The racist and disgraceful part of Strom Thurmond's history is what made him nationally known and is his legacy to most people. It's not like he is known for being prominent in a certain skill/ career and just happen to hold racist views, his segregationist views is what made him a big deal. He never formerly renounced his past and while he made little changes over the years he never was as outspoken about the rights of minorities as he was to minimize them in past.
But he should be President? How does he get a pass on that if the people the actively supported and praised aren't deserving to even have their name on a building?
He most certainly did. See my post way above when Joe Biden eulogized him at his funeral in Columbia.
He said that Strom renounced what he used to believe and turned into a senator for all. He really loved South Carolina and did many things in favor of it. For that, they became close friends for 30 years in the senate.

So his friend said he changed his views in private conversation to him. That is not exactly an apology to the public for promoting/pronlonging dangerous views that impacted minorities in this country.

I've never met him but he was a very well respected among most everybody. This whole mess started with the police brutality he had nothing to do with. I was an intern for Senator Thurmond in 1980 and at that stage of his life he was not a racist and was a very nice, caring person. He had a lot influence, was a great advocate, and cared deeply for the state of South Carolina.

This has nothing to do with recent police brutality protesting. People were against the naming of the gym when it was announced. I can only speak on behalf of my black relatives and from those who are passed away over the years to now, they don't like the man for what he stood for and the scandal of him not acknowleding his black daughter to the public despite everything was adding salt to the wound to my family. So to answer you question, I don't hate the man, I didn't like some of his political views but I don't hate him, but having said that I don't think he deserves to be celebrated at USC.

It’s not like this is an actual statue of Thurmond or a building that he built, designed, or financed himself. It could have any name under the sun, or no name at all. It might as well be the Get Swole & Tight Center (GSTC). But there is certainly no need to name it after a guy that made it his job to keep America segregated as long as possible while having an actual African American daughter that he was evidently ashamed of (his biggest sin IMHO). This gym is not “history.” It wasn’t even around when most of us posters went to school.
