award the NC to Dawn Staley and the women's BB team. The season was complete and Carolina was number 1 by far and should be recognized for it. It should be the same for the men's side as well. I don't even know who was number 1 but that is what should happen....HANDS DOWN.

Yeah, remember all the respect an adulation UCF got nationally when they claimed that NC in FB and had a big parade? We are really going shine on the national stage as a school and fanbase if we rattle our sabers about awarding us an illegitimate WBB championship... That should strike fear into the rest of the SEC. Then, let’s set up a huge parade to celebrate said illegitimate championship during a time when non-essential large public gatherings are being banned to prevent virus spread... Again, this is all a wonderful idea! Because, you know public health concerns are secondary to the feelings of a few female athletes who may or may not have won a tournament that was never even played.... Seriously? Eyeroll

A little bit of difference here my friend. UCF didn't make it into the playoffs and and was not, hands down, the best team. Plus the playoffs were not cancelled. Come on man! The seriousness of a little more dangerous flu virus doesn't even figure into my thinking. The regular flu is still killing waaay more people than corona. The WBB team earned it and deserves it.

You are exactly right ! There is zero comparison to what UCF did. We did finish the season unanimous number 1. Won our conference and conference tourney
So if the season is over which it is
Then we absolutely should be crowned national champions

I may not be RT’s biggest fan, but he’s doing the right thing but not going down this path right now. There are many more important things this country is dealing with aside from a women’s basketball title. I love my Gamecocks, but dang...really?

Hell, If Bama can make a habit of claiming NC's, where some years were dubious - 1973, some were laughable 1930, 1934, and then downright ridiculous 1941 (final rank #20), then I don't see any reason why we can't claim a NC.

Tanner? Yeah right.

The season ended and we finished ranked #1 in the polls and have the resume to back up our claim. Hang the Banner, who cares if the NCAA recognizes or not. We actually have a legitimate claim, no comparison to UCF a few years ago. This team should have their hard work recognized.

Over the past 24 hours, the decision seemed increasingly inevitable. On Thursday, it happened.

NCAA president Mark Emmert announced that the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments — in addition to all winter and spring championships — would be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That means no brackets, no March Madness, no Cinderellas and no national championship game. But should it also mean no champion at all?

This NCAA tournament looked to be as wide open as any tournament in recent memory, but one team had certainly separated itself from the rest of the pack over the past couple months. And that was Kansas.

The Jayhawks, winners of 16 straight games and a Big 12 regular season title, went into the week as the unanimous No. 1 team in every major poll. In fact, Kansas was such a lock as the No. 1 overall seed that ESPN’s bracket guru Joe Lunardi said that Kansas could have skipped the Big 12 tournament entirely (welp) and still get the top overall seed in the NCAA tournament.

If there ever was a team that could go full UCF and claim a championship this season, it’s Kansas.

When you’re looking at the criteria that the NCAA tournament committee uses for its selections — NET, ESPN strength of record, BPI, KPI, KenPom, Sagarin — Kansas came in at No. 1 in every one of those except for NET (which they were No. 2). The Jayhawks will end the season as the unanimous No. 1 in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Coaches Polls.

It won’t be a popular move from every non-Kansas fan, but should Kansas go ahead and hang a banner in Allen Fieldhouse, it would be justifiable given the circumstances. After all, college football spent roughly 125 years of deciding its champion with polls. This wouldn’t be any different.

Kansas — just as South Carolina did on the women’s side with Dawn Staley — has the body of work to back up a championship. Whether the NCAA decides to recognize a champion this way remains to be seen, but Kansas should go ahead and do it anyway — especially given the looming cloud of NCAA sanctions.

That idea is already being floated around amongst college basketball fans.

In the old days, whoever finished #1 in the polls won the NC. Seems like a no-brainer this time for the #1 teams, men and women, to be awarded the NC. The scary part is trying to connect the NCAA with having a brain. The regular season should count since there is no tournament.

If they wanted to be fair about it, they could even have the polls / papers vote and name a champion. It doesn't have to be an award from the NCAA. Let the voters decide like they have done in the past in other sports.

Good idea- This is the only way to award a championship without making your school look foolish and calloused and focused on the wrong things right now. Take the top 4-5teams, and let coaches and a selection committee vote. If they don't do that, then we should move on. We got a new banner to hang from this year, hang the SEC banner... Hang a banner saying “finished 2020 season ranked #1*” or something comparable, but just laying claim to a championship not awarded through either winning the tournament or a fair system where unbiased third parties selected the winner the championship and awarded it to you... Just does not send the right message and leads to ridicule. Ray addressed the question properly in his presser I felt.

As a USC fan, yeah, that would be great. As a sports fan, no. I think you can put something up saying they're No. 1 at end of the season, but for basketball (unlike football years ago), a national champion is declared for the winner of the tournament. There is no provision for the tournament not being played, so there is no national champion. Do I think USC is the best team in the country, yes? Do I think there are other teams that could have won the tournament? Yes, it was possible. There are a few elite teams and it would just be a matter of who was playing the best. Sometimes, the best team doesn't win (See USC losing to Syracuse in 2016 Sweet 16.)

It would be much tougher to do for men's basketball because there is no clear-cut No. 1 team based on how many teams have been No. 1 this year.

It sucks, but that's the way it is.

Dawn should schedule a game somewhere half way across the country with Oregon with the agreement that the winner hangs the banner. Let the girls settle it on the court once this mess calms down!

Psst, in space & time, it wasn’t that long ago (like yesterday), that the final poll indicated the champions.
