The Call: University of South Carolina RB Mike Davis

I agree, pretty good story.

I am happy for Mike Davis and his family. It will be good to hear his name called in this year's NFL Draft.

Good luck Mike!!!

Do you really think he'll get drafted? I've heard several analysts say they doubt he will get drafted or possibly a 6th or 7th round pick. He'd be better off going undrafted than to be drafted in the 6th or 7th round, that way he could pick and choose where he'd have the best chance. My guess is he'll end up on a practice squad somewhere.

Best of luck to him! Glad he is/was a Gamecock! Mike has handled himself pretty well.......

I hear almost the exact same statements from more than one person every year -- it's better to be a free agent than to be drafted in the 6th or 7th round.

I say: Baloney.

Employers are hiring people everyday, and the NFL is among them. The draft is the NFL's invitation to the best prospective employees. Tell me: Do you think you have a better shot of getting hired by a company as an uninvited free agent -- i.e. walk in off the street with a cold-call application -- vs. an invitation to come inside and interview from the executive staff?

Draftek currently has him 5th Rd to Falcons. Catscratchreader has him 5th Rd to Panthers.

One advantage of being a free agent is being able to sign with a team that is not loaded with players/stars at your position. Get drafted by a team loaded with quality backs and your chances are limited.

Was Davis a better running back than Shaw was a QB for us? Connor didn't get drafted.

That has nothing to do with it. There have been QBs that won the Heisman who didn't get drafted. You have to have a skill set suited for the NFL.

I do keep up with Shaw and Clowney, but I'm not obsessed with it. I love GAMECOCK football!!!! When our best players go undrafted, it makes our program look like crap. When we have only 1 player that is a legitimate 2nd team College All American, it makes our program look like crap. I'm not going to waste my time trying to figure out if it's better for a player to get drafted late or go undrafted and try to make a team. They're GONE! I'd rather focus my energy on the Gamecock football team this fall.

Mike didn't show much toughness last year, that's hurting his draft position as well. He tapped out way too much.

Yep, Mike tapped out a lot and went on record saying that he doesn't ask for the ball when the game is on the line.

The NFL wants guys that are hungry and can be counted on to play.
