*** In the aftermath of the Texas A&M game, the mood surrounding Will Muschamp's future in Columbia took a dramatic shift.

In and around the administration, as we have written numerous times, the expectation heading into 2020 was that due to a variety of factors (COVID-19, staffing changes that Will Muschamp made, a conference-only slate, and a substantial buyout figure) Muschamp would be safe for the entirety of the 2020 season, at a minimum. That line of thinking has changed.

There have been plenty of questions raised among the Gamecock fan base regarding today's Board of Trustees meeting. To clear those up, that meeting has been on the books for months, and the actual agenda has nothing in the way of athletics discussion. What is actually significant is that, behind the scenes, conversations within the athletic department and administration have the winds blowing in the direction of change.

South Carolina has four games remaining on the 2020 conference-only schedule, including one on Saturday in Oxford in which the Gamecocks are an underdog. A loss to the Rebels could accelerate things.

*** Much of the conversation pertaining to South Carolina's ability or willingness to move has centered around the high buyout figure, especially with a significant athletics budget shortfall on the table.

While the buyout has been an element, it's also been weighed against numerous other factors. The buyout, at this stage, is not considered a hindrance to South Carolina moving forward.

*** Many have also wondered about the future of athletics director Ray Tanner. According to sources, Tanner is expected to remain in his current post and there are no current plans for him to retire or otherwise move on from the position at this time.

*** Stay tuned to GamecockCentral.com as we continue reporting on the situation.
