*** Shane Beamer will be back in Columbia on Sunday, following Oklahoma’s appearance in the Big 12 title game, but has been working around the clock on video calls and telephone calls to individuals and groups since he took his post as Carolina’s head football coach.
GamecockCentral.com has learned that on Tuesday night, Beamer had a video call with a group of current Gamecock players’ parents. Feedback we received from that call indicated that Beamer was asked a lot of questions and that he provided a lot of answers.
In addition to that, Beamer has been getting on the phone individually with current players to introduce himself and talk shop; some of these calls have been pretty lengthy from what we have heard.
*** Players and staff were tested for COVID prior to a team meeting on Sunday after a mandatory week off and additional testing was conducted on Tuesday. From what have been told, the numbers were good in the aftermath. As we have said, the program has continued toward playing in a bowl game if an invite is accepted, but we are constantly tracking the situation.
*** We mentioned here on The Insiders Forum on Monday that Eric Wolford has been a candidate to join Mark Stoops’ staff at Kentucky; the two are close.
That certainly remains the case, and Stoops’ public comments on Tuesday seemed to indicate – without explicitly naming him of course - that Wolford is the guy that UK is waiting on here.
One obstacle was just removed with Kentucky getting its offensive coordinator in Liam Coen. Wolford is also still under contract with the Gamecocks and expected to coach the bowl game, should the team play in one in the next couple weeks. Wolford worked with Beamer in Columbia previously and there are some indications he’s drawn at least some level of consideration for the staff here. Beamer, we know, has also been considering outside hires for the offensive line position.
It does appear that Wolford is the guy that Stoops wants and there’s certainly a good chance that he ends up heading to Lexington.
*** As surprising as it is given the circumstances, is it indeed accurate that Kevin Steele is squarely in the mix for Auburn’s vacant head coaching position. Steele has the support of some key folks at the university.
Why does that matter here, aside from just following what’s happening at another SEC program?
Steele, according to what we’ve been told, has inquired about the possibility of getting Mike Bobo to be his offensive coordinator in Auburn, should he secure the job.
Bobo is still under contract with South Carolina until next December, and he’s someone we know that Shane Beamer has also considered keeping on staff in Columbia. There have been conversations on that front and it’s a legitimate possibility from what we have been told from multiple sources. There’s no firm resolution just yet to the direction that Beamer will go on that front, and we are continuing to track coaching moves in terms of retains and new hires on GamecockCentral.com.
Stay tuned!
