Too early for the Gregg Marshall conversation????

I'd rather have Mike Young from Wofford. With that being said we have a basketball coach who I think will be here for a long time.

Yeah, no kidding. No one good in a good situation is going to want to coach here until this program starts to turn it around, and if that starts to happen, we'll stay with Martin.

To early, yes.

To late, not by a long shot. The worse Martin performs the better the chances...now that Tanner is AD.

What makes you think that? He's not really done anything in any sport to hold anyone accountable.

The fact that Deke Adams still has a job proves that. Nobody has done so much so fast to ruin one of the best things about the team quicker than that man.

As an alum of USC and WU, I would have loved seeing Marshall hired after Odom. Unfortunately, Hyman didn't go that route. Same goes for the search to replace Horn. Frank Martin discussion aside, Gregg Marshall is a rock star in coaching. He built Winthrop into a mid-major power (see his Power 5/Big East non-con wins), culminating in the 2007 NCAA win over Notre Dame. I fully believe he would have won more NCAA games at WU, had he not been give 15 and 16 seeds almost every year. Even then, his squads were fairly competitive in those over-matched games. He then goes to Wichita State, turning them into a perennial power (with Final Four appearance). The man just gets it done, no questions asked.

On a side note, current WU coach Pat Kelsey has done a good job of getting Winthrop back to winning (after Randy Peele experiment, Marshall's replacement). Kelsey is in his 3rd year ... 14-17 (6-10 BSC), 20-13 (10-6 BSC), and 13-10 (8-4 BSC) this season. Kelsey is just 39 years old and was Skip Prosser's assistant at Wake Forest in mid-00's, after playing for him at Xavier. I think he's a coach to watch in future years.

Re: Watch out....you are about to the wrath of the anti-Marshallers..

down on you....they usually descend like swarms of killer bees even on people ask innocent questions as to the details of the decisions about why Marshall was not considered stronger when he was the OBVIOUS candidate the first two times.

The vehemence with which many of them lash out leads most to have determined that these boosters were the ones in the ear of the ADs pushing the strongest to go away from Marshall....you know the old SC politics sickness...better my choice in losing than a good coach if I wasn't the mover behind the scenes....those types.

Oh well...the Marshall deal is gone......lets just hope the fools who screwed it up last time have learned their lesson and get the hades out of the way and let the professional sdo their business....look you dolts, you sell real estate and provide plumbing services, that doesn't make you an authority on picking basketball coaches....regardless of how much money you give.

My only hope when the program goes looking...they just pick someone who cares more about shooting and scoring than keeping teams in the 20s every game....at least then losing will be more entertaining than watching a soccer match on hard court where the team goes 17 minutes of a basketball game against Vandy while making ONE FREAKING SHOT.

One FREAKING SHOT from a college basketball team......

I was a Marshall fan from the git go, but I've been supportive of Martin, too. I really like his enthusiasm. I think it's just a matter of who can convince a couple of really good players to come here and get it started. Whether Martin can do that is still in question. I feel like we have a couple of guys who can play but are still a little inexperienced. I'm willing to wait a couple more years.

I'm fine with Frank Martin for now mainly because he inherited perhaps the worst basketball program of any of the big 5 conferences when he came in. Games like yesterday's plus the 20 game road losing streak suck, but he basically inherited a program that was coming off the death penalty. Considering he is someone who had consistent success at KSU, I'm willing to wait a bit longer. The game yesterday was terrible, though, and much more of those types of performances will do nothing to instill confidence in where the program is headed.

As for Marshall, the question I ask is why would he leave Wichita for us? He's got a consistent winning program going with much more tradition than USC. I just don't see what USC has that Wichita doesn't. I guess money?

What you said. Except that I imagine that when he leaves Wichita State he goes to one of the historic programs in college basketball, or MAYBE the pros. Not sure if he is the pro type, but at some point a job like Indiana or Kentucky is coming open.

Then I'd think that if Wichita State has continued to perform he is a logical candidate for jobs like that.

But for us, I think the Marshall train is gone.

It would be a combination of money and getting back to Carolina.

I'm with "eno" and "Winthrop"! The time was after Odom and again after Horn imo. Didn't happen - I think that was wrong but I'm behind our coach now! To make fun of Marshall talk is ridiculous and to bring it up at this point is MORE ridiculous - LOTS of people wanted him at the time, he wanted the job, and was a die-hard Gamecock - now it's moot & wasted discussion! Hope Coach Martin is what we need - I know he's trying hard and just landed a huge recruit - so we need to be behind him and his team and see how it plays out. Marshall no longer needs to be mentioned - that ship sailed - but there WAS a time many think it should've happened but the administration didn't choose that route & we'll NEVER know how that would've turned out for us!!

As others have said, way too late. Reading about his Wichita contract, he's up to about $2 million a year there. That's what Frank makes. And that's one reason Marshall wasn't interested when Frank was hired - you aren't going to lure a coach of a now-perrenial Top 25 program, that is happy with his administration, to a losing program without giving them a significant raise.

Unless USC is willing to go up to $3M+, then Marshall isn't close to being an option. And it would probably take $3.5M+.

Many at Carolina thought USC was too high-profile for Marshall, now the tables have turned in a major way.

^^^^This^^^^

I have been to Wichita and while it was a nice town, I would much rather live in South Carolina. I think we would get someone who would WANT to come here in Marshall. It sure would be nice to have someone courtside that isn't ripping into the kids during the game on national television.

That ship sailed many years ago and its never going to be in port here....Some people just need to learn to wave goodbye and move on with their lives....

Every time you lose a game you can expect a GM post! While a good coach and I wish we would have gotten him years ago we didn't and its time to move on.

GM couldn't fix this train wreck (MBB) within 4 or 5 years. FM won't be able to either....It takes time and effort and I see FM putting the effort in so I am inclined to give him a pass.

The women lose one game and you want to fire Dawn and replace her with Marshall? SMH
