South Carolina’s chances to win the SEC East are among the most underrated of any team in the division, says saturdaydownsouth.com.

Of South Carolina’s SEC East chances, site writer Christopher Smith wrote:

I’m not suggesting we install the Gamecocks as anything close to division favorites. But neither do I think we can totally discount South Carolina in the division this year. Coach Steve Spurrier owns Georgia, and probably cost the Bulldogs a division title with an upset last year. The Mizzou-South Carolina games have been very, very close and entertaining the last two seasons. Tennessee is unlikely to be perfect in SEC play in ’15.

“South Carolina’s biggest weakness in ’14, its pass defense, should get much, much better thanks to the hire of Jon Hoke as coordinator, an influx of decent pass rushers, the maturation of a young secondary and the installation of Kansas transfer and senior safety Isaiah Johnson.

“If Spurrier can approximate last year’s offensive production and the defense gets much better, USC could remain in the division mix all year.”

According to the report, people also underrated in the SEC East include Georgia coach Mark Richt’s career accomplishments and Florida quarterback Will Grier.

Among the most overrated in the SEC East: Florida coach Jim McElwain as a recruiter, Tennessee’s passing game and coach Butch Jones’ accomplishments at Tennessee.

Another report from Saturday Down South said the Gamecocks were one of three SEC teams with the best offseasons, citing the hire of Hoke and addition of new pass rushers.

We will see, I try not to be a sunshine pumper, but I also feel like we will do better than expected.

Everyone knows I'm no sunshine pumper, but I'm nowhere near worried about the defense. This whole season relies on the OL and Connor Mitch's development thus far, not the defense, to have a successful season.

I like to fly under the radar......... better than the shinning bleep on the screen.

I agree i give them all the credit for beating us. But still they went 7-6 and won a small bowl just like us.
Don't question Tennessee man. Aren't you aware of their impending greatness?

As for the article, was that written by Sgt. Obvious? I mean “if Spurrier can approximate last year’s offensive production and the defense gets much better, USC could remain in the division mix all year.” Ya think so???

I don't get the love for Tennessee. They are a mess on both sides of the ball.

Their total defense was in the mid 30s and their offense in the second half of the season was really good with Dobson in at qb. With almost everyone back I think they are the favorites for the east this season.

I am not sure anyone can be written completely off in the East this season, not a team entering the season without some serious questions that have to be addressed. Granted some have more than others but we all have them. Vandy was awful last year and most aren't expecting much improvement, but they changed almost the entire staff and return a bunch of starters. UK has a new OC, Stoops will have 3 of his recruiting classes and they return most of their offensive production, Missouri lost some defensive stars, will they replace them like they have done the last 2-3 years, return their qb and a good rb. UT returns a huge amount of starters, can Dobbs improve his passing enough to take advantage of all those receivers, will their defense be able to slow down the run? UF, complete new staff, maybe a new starter at qb, no proven playmakers, can their defense be good enough to allow the offense to come together? UGA is looking for a qb and could struggle offensively in spite of return 8 starters, can the defense hold up long enough to find a qb? USC has questions at qb, has the defense improved enough to keep a learning on the job offense in games?

The winner of the east will be the team that can find answers to those questions the quickest. Of course most fans don't see question marks for their team, the new coach is automatically better and every replacement is better than the guy he is replacing, unless he is a multi year AA, then the replacement is just a step behind. None of the teams in the east may be very good, but the race should be exciting all season, unless one of those teams answers all their questions pre season.
