For anyone interested in a little "light" reading, I have published three chapters in blog form from a book project I am working on, which examines South Carolina athletics in the years between the ACC and the SEC - the "Independent years", or as some have called them, "The Wilderness", which is the planned title for the book.

These are lengthy, but it was really interesting researching these chapters...

Storms In The Southland - Why South Carolina left the ACC

Paul Dietzel And The Modernization Of South Carolina Athletics

Any Port In A Storm - South Carolina And The Metro Conference Experiment

Ok. Ok. So, just for clarification here now, who's Alan Piercy??? =;-p

And if you just happen to know Mr. Piercy personally, please tell him that some of us most certainly look forward to the complete book!! (~_θ)

OUTSTANDING read. One key note in the first article.....OUTSIDE AGITATORS created a lot of the trouble. Imagine that .....
Downtown Charleston had the same a couple of week's back when 40 businesses were burned to the ground (the company my son works for had to clean up the mess - he came in during/after the mess to clean it up) TOTAL STUPIDITY...... both Charleston and North Charleston went under curfew. Now, I am planning to retire on the other side of Interstate 95....I will not be put under this stressful crap again. Not to mention I have gotten myself, shall we say, better prepared. He saw, with his own eyes, buses and pallets of bricks and such that were not from this area. LIBERAL crap again.

This is great reading! Thanks for posting. Can’t wait for the entire book.

When’s the anticipated release of the full book?

Its a work in progress. Several more chapters and topics planned:
  • the rise of the baseball program to national prominence under Richardson and Raines
  • the rise of women's sports programs during this period, including the early success of women's basketball under Pam Parsons, and her unfortunate downfall.
  • the Carlen and Morrison eras with focus on the bowl seasons of 1975, 79, 80, 84, 87 and 88
  • various scandals and probations, including the steroids scandal, Jimmy Foster and the "borrowed car", etc
  • Rogers' Heisman campaign, Zam Fredrick's national scoring championship
  • Salvation - the events leading to SEC membership
So much happened in this 20 year period. Lots of stories to tell. I would like to align the release with the 50th anniversary of Carolina leaving the ACC, which would be next summer. Much work to complete between now and then. Wish me luck. Appreciate your interest...

I love reading this kind of info, thanks so much for sharing!

Wow what a bad decision by the board, could of just stayed the coarse and got what we wanted

On March 28, 1971 the Board of Trustees announced that the University would withdraw from the conference on August 15 of that year.

On August 7, 1971, a federal court ruled that the ACC’s 800 standard was “arbitrary and capricious”, and was “not based on valid reasoning”, as it set a standard for athletes that did not apply to other students. On August 18th, 1971, just three days after the University of South Carolina officially relinquished its membership, the ACC dropped the embattled 800-rule.

The only thing I know for sure is IF we get the same recruits, we play for the ACC title every year between 2009 and 2014, especially if we are in a different division than FSU. That’s the big if though. I miss some of the regional rivalries, but going to Wake Forest or Duke blows compared to UGA or UF. But then, UVa, VT, and NCS/UNC are potential great games

I think there is every reason to believe we would have had as much success as Clemson in football over the years had we stayed in the ACC. Not so much talking about the last four years with their unrivaled success, but over the course of decades - Carolina was trending up, with their first conference championship in '69, and the best facilities in the conference by 1971.

Basketball was obviously the real loser. Those rivalries would have only deepened. In an alternate universe where cooler heads prevailed, I believe South Carolina would have remained a relevant national power in men's basketball, and would have continued to challenge for ACC titles year in and year out. Imagine a scenario where McGuire retires around the same timeframe - 1980, but is replaced not by Bill Foster, but by a young Bobby Cremins? So many possibilities.
