USC Library System is comprised of several buildings and collections. At this time, the system is home to over 4,000,000 volumes, and is rapidly growing.
South Caroliniana Library:
Built in 1840, the library was the first free-standing academic library in the United States. Like much of USC's campus, it survived the Civil War and has been renovated over the years. It was replaced as the main library on campus by the McKissick Memorial Library (Museum) in 1940, but the South Caroliniana Library still stands as part of the library system.
It houses special collections of the University Archives and has massive amounts of newspapers, manuscripts, film, maps, audio recordings, pamphlets, maps, etc...
The library was designed by Columbia's Robert Mills.

Thomas Cooper Library:
Originally built in 1976 to replace the McKissick Library, the Thomas Cooper Library has been an icon on campus. The original library has 2 floors above ground and 5 floors below ground for a total of 286,000 square feet. It has a capacity of over 1.5-million books, with an additional 1.5-million books stored at The Library Annex (aka:"The Box")
Recently, renovations modernized the library and added 50,000 square feet to the structure. There still remains the possibility for wings to be added on the sides of TCL totaling another 60,000 square feet. As for now, it stands at 336,000 square feet and is the central hub of the library system.
