In regards to rocket launching that is...

With an ideal location on the coast of Georgia, bordering northeast Florida, Camden County is strategically positioned to be one of the most important commercial spaceports in the United States.

Maybe South Carolina outta try to step in as well; perhaps the St. Helena/Hunting/Pritchards Island area(s) could put us in competitive position so to speak! Maybe even you Beaufort natives would appreciate such as far as any potential economic benefits are concerned! 😎😉

I’d rather we left our coast alone. Just my opinion though

In the late '60s early '70s BASF was interested in erecting a plant on the Okatee River in Southern Beaufort County. Was thoroughly rejected.

There's also regional pushback against a seismic drilling initiative off the coast.

In all honesty, that suggestion of mine was nothing more than dry humor I assure you!!

I mean I totally dig Pritchards Island exactly how it is, and by no means wish for it to change! Same for St. Helena and Hunting, as-well-as Fripp!!
Fripp has already changed for the worse with far too many McMansions on the island.

Camden County, Georgia, home of my ancestors. My father left the area in the early 1930's and moved to the 'Promised Land' - Charleston. Sure wish he had held onto the family acreage for future investment! LOL!

That's too bad. Last time I was there was around 8 years ago. Along with several other friends, my parents had shared ownership of a house there. It's where my kids grew up going to the beach, such a relaxing place.

Never been out there; I guess I won't bother.

Been a few years (i.e., back when I was married and my sons were kids), but we, a long with another family of friends, used to rent a pretty good sized place for a week on Fripp every summer.

Enjoyed it, it was expensive, but it sure beat spending a week at Myrtle by a loonnnggg shot!!

Just sayin', no biggy.

Edisto reminds me a lot of what Fripp looked like in the 1970s.

But do visit Beaufort if you haven't.
Man I grew up going to Edisto w/ my parents back in the 70's! In all honesty, that is why I despise Myrtle!! Just cannot handle that many Canadians, Ohioans and West Virginians all at once!!

There are some folks trying to get this thing stopped. They've filed suit, etc. So there's a slim chance (I think) the project gets scrapped.

I live up in Effingham County, work in Bryan County and got family in McIntosh County and friends up and down the coast. Only people I know thrilled about the idea are those who stand to make money from it.

Georgia's coast has gotten hit hard by development over last 15-20 years, and it's having a negative impact on quality of life -- unless, of course, you stand to benefit from it economically. The rest of us just have to put up with the after effects or move.

I don't vacation at Myrtle in the summertime. That's firm.

Man back in the day, I used to hit the Georgia coast several times every summer for various conventions where we'd setup our vender booth as-well-as participate in the golf matches, etc.

Point being that I've spent many days on Jekyll and St. Simons Island!
Had some good times on Tybee Island as-well!

Just sayin' that I can totally understand why all the locals down that way would prefer to keep things as they are. Heck, I honestly believe that I could quite comfortably live in the Brunswick area!

JMHOFWIW,

G

I've only been to Edisto a couple of times - just after Thanksgiving.

Growing up in Beaufort, most of our "city trips" for shopping were to Savannah, with occasional forays to Charleston. Almost every time en route to Charleston when we would pass the signs to Edisto Beach (20 miles) on US 17, I would think "I'd like to visit it one of these days." The day finally happened about 8 years ago when my wife and I drove there from Beaufort on the Monday after Thanksgiving just to see what it looks like. Went back about four years ago - still could find neither the Harbor Island Bridge nor the Hunting Island Lighthouse.

When driving on the causeway (on both the former and current Harbor River bridge) from St. Helena to Harbor Island, you can see the south end of Edisto beach when looking to the north (left) across St. Helena Sound. Part of my motivation to go to Edisto was to see if I could see the Harbor River bridge from the south end of Edisto - no luck.

I haven't been back to Edisto since the new Harbor River bridge opened several months ago. Might be easier to see the new one from Edisto since it's a "high rise".

Lowcountry_cock13, have you had an opportunity to ride over the new Harbor Island bridge? Spectacular views.

I haven't seen it yet myself, but got the above photo from this site.

I haven't been to Edisto myself since back in 2008!! Had no idea of the new bridge until you mentioned it above!!
