Way OT: Do any of you pay for Water Service Line Insurance?

Wut?

I get letters from Town of Lexington every year about it. Think it's like $3 to $5 a month? Covers from your house to the meter.

LOL....not sure other than maybe it's a more common issue than most think? So they send this "scary" letter advising what it would cost out of pocket for the homeowner to replace pipes, water line, etc in case of an issue, and then push the monthly/yearly insurance.b
It's kind of a racket. I believe the town or city gets a cut of the premium.

Same thing as "inside wire maintenance" the telephone and Internet providers sell. Repairs are covered if something goes wrong with your inside wiring.

Fact is, the city or county is only responsible for the water line " to the meter". After from the service side of the meter to your house its your responsibility .and anything in your house.

Some of those lines are PVC. Do it yourself.
That's true and I've repaired one myself. But a neighbor had a problem that required a backhoe due to the line being very deep due to the slope of the yard. They had to go down about 8 to 10 feet.

This service line coverage is becoming a common add-on to home insurance policies. Not a lot of extra premium for a loss that can be very expensive if it happens.

Covers communications, drainage, water and sewer, electrical power and other seevice lines that you as a homeowner are responsible to pay for repairing.

Coverage is limited to the
part of the service line
running from the point of
connection to the main
service or utility line up to the dwelling.

Normally has a coverage limit of $10-12,000 and a deductible of $500.

Covers:
Wear and tear
Rust and corrosion
Mechanical breakdown
Freezing or frost heave
Tree or other root
invasion

It’s definitely not a scam, but like all insurance, you have to decide how risk tolerant or averse you are and the cost/benefit of having the coverage.

I bought it, but I didn't read the fine print. To invoke the policy there has to be a 20% or more reduction in flow as measured by them. We had low water pressure so I called them. They measured the flow at the meter and the flow where it entered the house and said it was not a sufficient reduction. I canceled the policy ($14.95 a quarter) and hired someone to replace the galvanized steel water line in the yard. He did it for $675 and it improved the water pressure in the house.

I have their exterior septic line coverage. There's no similar limitation. If the line is blocked enough to cause a back up they either have to clear it or replace it at no cost to me. They will pay up to $4,000. Thankfully, most of the interior plumbing has been replaced.

I don’t have the insurance, but four years ago I was getting ready to put my 25 year old house on the market. Heard a noise outside, looked out the front door, and I saw water bubbling out of my front yard by the meter.

Luckily, the pipe had failed on the opposite side of the meter to my house, so Berkeley County Water had to handle the repair. If it’d happened on my side of the meter it’d have been my responsibility.

Not sure what my cost would’ve been, but they had to dig down 10-15’, and it took two days to repair. If I had an older house I’d consider the insurance.

Sounds like bull shit. If it happens on my side I’ll dig the line and fix it. But I’m more likely to see a polar bear riding a tricycle than have this happen.

I just got one of those letters from Columbia Water yesterday. They love to send them out trying to get people to subscribe.
I’m hopeful that I never need it

Next time you see a city crew digging up a line stop and get some telephone numbers. On the side they'll do the job for a fraction of what insurance costs in the long run. Then again you may never have a problem with the lines.

I don't pay for water line insurance. I think that this is not included in my field of responsibility. This burden should be on the shoulders of the municipality.
I already pay a lot of various insurance. Half of my salary goes to this.
One of these insurances is liability insurance. I work as a PR manager, and it is very important to be insured in my work. If something goes wrong, my client can sue me.
There was such a case recently. We made a small PR move for my client, which caused the image of another person to suffer. It's all too complicated, and I was very glad to pay for this insurance.

No, I had a supply line replaced and it wasn’t very expensive. It wasn’t that long from the street t the house so YMMV.
