WBB: Five things to Watch - Duke
Tip is at 7 on the ACC Network.
Henny is warming up, just like she did last game, so we'll see...
Everyone is here, warming up.
Gamecock starters: LA, Cooke, Beal, Saxton, Boston.
For such a rich school, Duke has been using the same crappy chairs for media since the 70s. (I kid!)
Duke wins the toss and hits a three.
Lots of threes from both teams. Duke wants to shoot threes, and is giving USC the three with its 2-3 zone. LA and Boston each hit, and USC leads 6-3.
The Gamecocks finally get the ball inside. Boston scores on a post up and then Saxton scores a putback. Duke is 1-9 shooting and 1-5 from three. Gamecocks lead 10-3 at the media timeout.
Cardoso is first off the bench, replacing Saxton. USC has a 10-5 rebounding advantage and then put in its 6-7 center. Gamecocks lead 12-3.
Beal steals it and the blue sea parts for a fast break layup. Everyone just got out of her way. Gamecocks lead 16-3. Timeout Duke, who is 1-10 shooting, 1-6 from 3, with 4 turnovers.
Big cheer as Durham native LeLe Grissett checks in.
Gamecocks lead 17-7 after 1Q. Boston already has 7 points and 6 rebounds. Duke is 2-13 shooting and 1-8 from three. When they aren't making threes they are in trouble anyway, but especially against USC's bigs. BTW that was your normal 17-0 first quarter run.
Littleton, who got a DNP-CD Sunday, starts the second and hits a three. It's kind of funny watching the defense: Duke keeps setting screens but as soon as they try to turn the corner there's a hand in their face from LA or Cardoso or Beal or one of the other rangy defenders.
Littleton hits another three and it's a 25-9 lead. Day-Wilson answers, but Duke is just 2-11 from three.
Gamecocks lead 25-12 at the media timeout. Duke is just 4-18 and the Gamecocks are +15 rebounding, but the second unit struggled against the zone.
Littleton hits another three, but then Taylor hits a jumper and Dawn calls timeout. Gamecocks lead 28-14 with 1:59 left in the half. Offense in the 2Q has been non-existent.
Gamecocks lead 32-16 at halftime. Boston nearly had a double-double with 9 points and 8 rebounds, but she was mostly held in check in the second quarter. Littleton added 9, all threes. Gamecocks shot 38.7%, Duke 28.6%. USC was 5-11 from three, Duke 2-12. South Carolina has a 24-8 rebounding advantage and 14 second chance points on 12 offensive rebounds.
Former Blue Devil, current Las Vegas Ace, and gold medal winner Chelsea Gray was honored at halftime, about the only time the crowd has agreed on anything.
Gordon hits a couple of threes and Saxton misses to free throws. Gamecocks lead is down to 34-24.
Cooke can't make a three, so she drives and kicks to Boston for three. Gamecocks lead 37-24 at the media timeout.
Cooke can't buy a basket. She's missed a a couple layups and is 1-10. Dawn subs her out for Hall to try to clear her head. Gamecocks lead 40-28 and Cooke is already back at the scorers table.
USC is just 5-11 from the line (Duke is 2-2)
There is a review for the shot clock and we have dueling "Let's Go Duke" and "Game-Cock" chants going.
Gamecocks will have the ball, up 41-31 with 47.2 left in the 3Q. A strong finish would be really nice.
LA grabs an offensive board and is fouled. She makes one and South Carolina leads 42-41 after 3Q. Duke outrebounded the Gamecocks by one in the third and South Carolina shot just 3-15.
A pullup by Day-Wilson pulls Duke within seven. Cooke misses and Day-Wilson misses a heat-check three. That might be the turning point. Boston scores in the paint, blocks a shot, and scores again. Instead of a four-point game it's now an 11-point Gamecocks lead. Timeout Duke. Also the Duke band is playing "Rock Lobster."
Out of the timeout, Boston stole the ball. Then she saved a bad pass and hit a layup. The teams trade threes, Boston forces a miss, and Cooke hits a jumper. Gamecocks lead 53-38.
USC is having trouble with the press so they give the ball to Boston. Because you always trust your center to dribble full court against pressure.
Staley empties the bench. Gamecocks lead by 11 with less than 30 seconds to play.
Wesolek draws a charge and Boston leaps off the bench cheering.
South Carolina beats Duke 55-46. Boston had 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
