WBB: Saniya Rivers wins Gatorade POY

I have seen several on this board who don’t comprehend just how good she is. She will be the top sub off the bench for Beal and Cooke by conference play maybe sooner.
Listen one of my co workers is from NC and has seen her play live. Dude say she is "straight nasty".

I was salivating when he made the comment.

I think she's going to be a really special player here. She has length, athleticism, can defend well and she can really shoot it. It's just a matter of how long it will take her to adapt to the college game. Her biggest hurdle will likely be how well she plays without the ball in her hands. Overall a well deserved award.

We are loaded.
Couple of things, we will have the same starting lineup as last year to start the season
Henny
Cooke
Beal
Saxton
Boston
DS is not going to mess with that. It will the task of newcomers to prove themselves and fit in.
Cardoso is great and huge, but please remember
1. She only played 20 minutes a game last year.
2. BOSTON has been the best center in the country for the past 2 years. She is a 5 not a 4. She rebounds better than Cardoso. Cardoso at present is a poor low post passer and turns it over too much. Cardoso has no medium range or 3 pt range.
The beauty of Boston in the post is that she draws her defender and opens up the middle for everyone else. If Boston is at the 4, the middle is packed and Boston is guarded on the perimeter by a quicker player.
They will play together at times and will probably run a hi-lo post with Boston at the elbow.
Boston played 23mpg as a freshman but almost 33mpg last year(too many) Ideally both play about 25mpg with Boston starting and Cardoso backing her, they will share the court at times but I do not think it will be in the way you envision.
Beal will start because DS doesn’t kick players to the curb, she is a proven exceptional defender and rebounder, doesn’t need the ball to score or for ego. HOWEVER if she can’t consistently hit the jumper her time will go down. Rivers will be more effective for this team as instant O and change of pace off the bench
Lele will probably not be rehabbed until January or maybe even later

All good points. I dont disagree with any of them. I think my premise is that the lineup who started the year simply wasnt offensively good enough at the 3 and 4 to beat the other 2 best teams in America. I love Brea and Victoria/Leticia. If they hold their spots, it means they've improved. However, I believe to reach our potential DS has to put her best 5 out there. Right now Boston is a better 4 than any other player on roster. It was apparent from the games last year that while Boston was dominant at the 5, the presence of a 3 or 4 who cannot shoot crowds the lane. That was why we saw much more of Boston on the perimeter than we envisioned. Inverting the two and allowing Saxon to play closer to the basket gives us the same result. And Saxon is probably better than Cordoso, so what you're saying makes sense.

I still wonder about Brea at the 3. If she can't improve her shooting, it limits us again. Thats mainly why I see Rivers in her spot.

Finally, i didnt give minutes, only starters in my opinion. I would assume the lineup that started in 2020 will end up playing the most together, due to DS's comfort level and experience.

Just my opinion. Really good problems to have.

I see she lists Kevin Durant as her favorite athlete. I can definitely see that in her game. She's long and athletic and can hit shots from just about every place on the floor. Can't wait for the season to start.

DS is “weird” in that she is willing to bring “better players” off the bench as shock troops. She did this with Alaina Coates who did not start until her junior year. A’ja only started one game as a freshman.
She wants the bench to alter the game. Rivers coming in a game for Beal will change the O with little drop in D. Amihere does the same when she subs Saxton. Those will be subs that demand the other team change because it is creating a mismatch.
Raven Johnson and Cardoso are different types of subs.
Henny played almost 35mpg last year because she was the only true PG. Dawn let Cooke and Grissett fill in at point only enough to give Henny a breather. If Johnson is all we believe her to be, than she gives us depth and a taller PG which will be important against taller teams.
Dawn loves true centers more than any coach in college. Most coaches are looking for a stretch 4(A’ja, Stewie, the girl at Stanford). Not Dawn, she wants a low post monster. Cardoso ensures that we will have a low post presence 40 minutes a game...... “Oh thank God Boston is taking a rest, oh $h1t here comes Cardoso!”
Cardoso bring so much value and will only get better. But I feel the most impact she has is that there will always be a low post threat in the game and defensive POTY in the middle on D.
Depth is a weapon that has a cumulative effect. Against good teams you will see us break them in the last 5 minutes of the half because of the relentless parade of talent. Very good teams may make it to the 4th quarter and just collapse.
I’ll shut up now, I’m rambling

Great points, I see the same starting lineup with Cardozo,Amihere, Raven and Rivers the next 4 in. I expect Russell and Littleton to to show improvement with a full season of play under their belt. Littleton will come back quicker due to a loss in weight. Russell sees what's behind her and will show improvement. My hope is that LA gets stronger in her upper body and learns not to bring the ball below her waist.

For the first game, I would pick 3 captains. Let the captains pick who is on their squad. Substitute one squad for another and run the other teams ragged. That is if there are no injuries and I am assuming there are 15 players on the team this year.

CDS reassigns players so that they learn playing together. Nah, not the way coaches do it. I was just trying to think of a way to get everyone to play and improve their game.

Raven Johnson is higher rated than Rivers.
Not really. Hoopgurlz/ESPN gets all the talk, but the majority of other recruiting services rank Rivers ahead of her. Indeed, even Hoopgurlz has Rivers rated higher until a new batch of evaluators was hired last summer.
