that has weather as well as the news for NC. The Spectrum channel just displayed a graphic that has some interesting facts about NC. It said the state of NC is referred to as Carolina and in parenthesis ( sorry, South Carolina). Now that is untrue. In all of my travels I've never hear of the state of North Carolina referred to as Carolina.
 
No. The states are either referred to individually or generically as "The Carolinas."

Now, James Taylor did sing "Carolina in My Mind" about his time growing up in NC. That's about the reference to "Carolina" that I know of. In the context of basketball, "Carolina" is going to be understood by most to mean "UNC." Neither school has enough clout in football to go simply by "Carolina" outside of the state.

I always say South Carolina, out of fear someone would mistake me from being from up there.

I've met yankees that didn't realize until they carpetbagged that there are 2 Carolinas.
