Welp, now that the season is over I guess I can talk about old Final Four Frank. Yep, just...

...just like I predicted, another season of typical FFF basketball. Lots of yelling and no meaningful results. This is how it will be 90% of the time as long as he roams the sidelines. Hey, ya'll remember when we beat Kentucky and won at Florida this year? Took down them Auburn Tigers too. Ya'll at least have that to keep you warm until next season's march to mediocrity continues.

Man, six seasons with four of them having losing records in the SEC, five without making the NCAA tourney. Yes, that's a real program he's building here. Clearly, we are on a sustainable path to improvement and didn't just get hot and fluke into the Final 4 at all. I'll bet that all of his projects will be improved enough in another 5 years that they'll be able to stagger down the court just enough to slip into the postseason again. That's a real program right there! And you know with his recruiting track record he''s just going to reel in every big time player in a talented in state class this year. How can you argue with the results?

I'm a low paid, unskilled worker. I would be willing to do Frank's job for a tenth of what he's charging you Frankbots. I can yell, scowl, recruit poorly and coach boring basketball at a discount. But I know, he fluked into that Final 4 last year, so it'll be okay if he only makes the tourney once in ten years. We shouldn't aspire to more. All I know is, this type of season is what we'll typically get with FFF as our coach. I don't expect Final 4's every year. I would expect to make the tourney more than once a decade though. Oh well, now FFF can go off and do whatever it is he does during the postseason. I'd imagine it's probably swimming in a pile of money like Scrooge McDuck while laughing at the Frankbots.

    Someday, maybe....someday.....

I love Marshall's drunkin wife and she is getting ready for St. Patties Day...

Maybe she can go topples in her drunkin state...

Like it, or not, the post is dead on. Last year was great, but the run at the end was, maybe not a fluke, but a stretch of consistent ball that the team had not showed all year long. Now is the time where the influence of a final four showing ought to start showing up in recruiting. Bowen is a unique situation, I am talking about a high school blue chip, or two, jumping in the mix. Without that, though many don't like it, the original poster in this thread is exactly right.

So how many here really thought this team would make the NCAA Tourny this year after losing 90% of their offense...then losing Felder to suspension? This team did exactly what I thought they would...a .500 team. Having said that I do expect a vast improvement next year.

Not I....but that still doesn't answer the question of why is a team this far into Martin's tenure so devoid of talent and experience. Recruiting is the life blood of any program...and he needs to do a better job of it. This was the biggest critique against him at KSU...and, thus far, it has held true here.

Look on one level I LIKE Frank Martin. He's the kind of guy you like to see as the head of your program.

But right now it's not happening. And given this was his 6th year the prospects of becoming a regular NCAA tourney team and being competitive with our conference rivals and Clemson don't look good.

So at what point does someone at USC make a move? One more like this past one? What? What's the criteria?

I have no idea if Silva is coming back. But guys decide to turn pro all the time, just part of the way things are.

But even if Silva leaves, next year's team better be a darn sight better than this one. Not that Tanner listens to me, but I'd think it pretty clear it was time to make a change.

Silva will come back, unless he is getting some bad advice. He has improved a ton, but can't see him being ready for the NBA. And I like Frank. Like his attitude. Hard to say a year after a final four appearance, but if next year's team isn't above the mediocre level, think you find Frank firmly on the hot seat for the 19-20 season.

Making the big dance 1 time in 6 years is downright deplorable. Unable to reel in any nationally top ranked players in the wake of a Final Four is also downright unacceptable. Making excuses for this terrible season due to the departure of four starters is downright lame. 6 years and no positive signs of moving in the right direction is downright alarming!

I thought the biggest critique were his tirades.

His parting tweet to the season left a giant ? ... sounded a little like a "farewell"
"Gamecock Nation my guys and our staff gave it everything we had and unfortunately the Arkansas game was our last opportunity to represent that Gamecock uniform."

But then he closed with "We r still building. We will b back!"

    Sounds conflicted to me.

Deplorable............. ROFL!!! Because we've been such a juggernaut over the past 15-20yrs!

This year was a definite step back, but to say 6yrs and no sign of moving in the right direction???? Did you pay attention to what was transpiring during his first 5yrs here??

To say ALL is fine, dandy and rosy would be naive. I would love to see recruiting be better, and see us nab some high-value recruits. But good grief, some of the wailing and moaning in here over a coach who less than 365 days ago took us to our first ever FF................SMH

I think his tirades were the biggest critique by our fans in his first couple of years here. Don't remember much about that coming out of KSU. Just remember hearing good coach, can't recruit...and that his assistants were the success behind KSU's recruiting. One came here for a couple of years and is now a HC elsewhere.

Coach Martin appears to be a poor evaluator of character and talent as evident by the number of transfers and early departures. He needs to do a better job of recruiting men who fit his system and possess the work ethic to excel in it. I admire his ability to develop players, but he might be more successful if he recruited players with better skill sets coming out of high school.

Coach Martin is better suited to coaching four-year players, not one-and-done players. Players need time to acclimate to his style of play and buy into his program. Until he addresses his recruiting deficiencies, the Gamecocks are unlikely to make another tournament run.

    Go Gamecocks!

I get it...basketball has always been a frustrating sport at USC. Martin did get screwed by the NCAA 2 years ago, should have been in with the wins they had. Seems like we are always one player away from being really good. And whats more frustrating is seeing the Feltons and the Zions of the world leave the state to play for the blue bloods. I like Frank and I think he is a great ambassador for the University, but at some point you are going to have to show consistent results.

With the final four run in his back pocket, now is not the time to be shoving Frank out the door, but I do think Frank needs to evaluate his assistant coaches and since as some on here have said; that he is not a good recruiter then he needs to add 1 or more coaches that are monsters on the recruiting trail. Do it while the shine of the final four run still hangs over us, because in about 2 more years it will be as if that run happened in the stone age to these 18 yr old high school kids, not to mention ole miss and Georgia are looking for coaches, and I'm hearing Thad Matta to ole miss (we all know he can recruit), and Tom Crean to Georgia (good coach, combined with the talent that comes out of Georgia year to year, scary) don't know if that's who they'll hire, but if they do the situation becomes a dire one.

All these people disagreeing with me about FFF are no doubt the same ones that bleated "trust the coaches" during the Spurrier era when it was obvious there were red flags about the future. Keep yo roll eye gifs handy for the future, because as long as Frank is here you'll need them.

This. The whole 'my livelihood depends on a bunch of 19-year-olds' thing is not your average run of the mill existence, to start with. Then you add in the scrutiny from armchair coaches and ADs on messageboards and sports call in shows and it's a wonder anybody wants to be a coach anymore.

By the way, I like Martin. I think he's a good ambassador and man and stands for the right things, like integrity. And that's more important than winning all the time.

If winning is the top priority, then why not just go find a pro sports team to pull for.

    Thanks

I think the winning season argument is misleading. In 6 years he went to the dance only 1 time. He's had a winning season in the SEC only twice. Creating a winning record due to wins over Wofford and Western Michigan (2x) is not compelling.

Actually, it is compelling when you look at our basketball history. It’s not like any of our previous teams were playing Kansas, UCLA, and Duke in the OOC schedule either. So judging him on consecutive winning seasons, something no one has done since McGuire is highly compelling.

And, while I was not happy with the outcome of this season, Martin marking it to the final four has bought him a whole lot of “benefit of the doubt.”

I would love to win a national championship every year, but the memory of that final four run is enough to get this Gamecock fan content for now.
