Not quite a fair comparison. Back then, far fewer teams went to the tourney. We were in the ACC. Only the ACC tournament champion was invited. One year, we went undefeated in the ACC during the season and made it to the championship game (in Greensboro as usual) and lost to NC State in double overtime when Roche played with a severely sprained ankle. It's subjective, to be sure, but I'll take McGuire over Martin any day.

and in my comments I said that McGuire was the greatest basketball coach we ever had. I never said that Martin was a better coach and that would have to include ability to recruit because McGuire was able to bring in talent early on. After we left the ACC it became much more difficult.

Actually it can take years to build in men's basketball and you can't compare it to women's bball. They're not nearly on the same level but I will say we were very fortunate to get Dawn Staley. As for men's basketball, we are in the middle of the ACC recruiting territory and it's very difficult to convince young men to come to South Carolina. Just look at how many players we have missed out on just in the Columbia area and it's always been that way. They would rather play for the UNCs of the world. A lot of it has to do with perception and USC is perceived as an inferior school when it comes to basketball. It will take a good stretch of success before we can begin to recruit on that level. The culture around the program has to change and that can't be changed overnight.

You get the right coach in here, whether it's Marshall or somebody else that can get just a couple of top notch players and that can change the fortune of a basketball program. You don't need as many good players to alter a team in basketball as you do in football.

I don't claim to be some kind of genius, and I don't have to be to see what we will get with FFF. Six seasons here and five of them are bad or boring. Trust the coaches though, right?

I've got news for ya'll. Frank is not putting you in his will, so you can be honest. But I'll tell you what. I won't say another word about Frank this season as long as we have a .500 or better record. In other words, I'll see you in six games, because we won't beat one of our next six opponents. There are some good players in the next recruiting cycle so hopefully we can grab a couple of them. The Zion Williamsons aren't coming to USC until we prove that we can win consistantly. I think we've had a total of 3 McDonalds all-Americans in the history of our program and that was Mckie, Howell, and Dozier.

Basically, he said he doesn't go after many McDonald All-Americans because he doesn't want a program full one and dones. His system takes an entire collegiate career to develop so he only wants to recruit 'his' type of players. That's why he brings in so many projects. He simply looks at big time recruits as a waste of time. Yes, he is trying to bring in Bowen, but he's not trying to fill a team out with one and dones like National Championship winning coach Calipari does.

Calipari has only won one National Championship and that was 6 years and 48 million dollars ago.

I like Frank Martin. And, I'm glad he is our coach. BUT, he needs an ace recruiter on his staff. The recruiting results this recruiting season, coming off a Final Four, is pathetic. If the 2019 recruiting goes like it did this year, Tanner needs to step on toes....HARD.

Frank took over a complete disaster here. Horn bottomed-out, left very little talent and even recruited against us on his way out.
So, did Frank have bad teams his first two years? Yeah, as every coach in the country would have.
The last 4 years have included a pair of 17-16 seasons with no post-season, a 24-8 team that was screwed out of a tourney bid, and a final four.
Now Frank has to continue growing the program. He has to raise our recruiting profile, plain and simple. I’m a little optimistic about making progress next year, with a lot of returning plAyers, plus the addition of Bowen (fingers crossed), Felder, Couisnard, and hopefully two more freshmen.

I've always loved the "you don't need as many good players to alter a team in basketball as you do in football" line. Well...guess what? There is not near the amount of good basketball players around as there is good football players. In other words, the percentages are still pretty much the same.
This was the thread I KNEW would be coming after this season. I like what someone else said elsewhere. Last year's final four run came AFTER we had filled our recruiting class for this year. What we have coming back, plus what we are adding make for a pretty decent team next year. The status of SC HS ball and the face that we are in on some of those players, put me in a wait and see mode. Too bad some feel otherwise.

...just like I predicted, another season of typical FFF basketball. Lots of yelling and no meaningful results. This is how it will be 90% of the time as long as he roams the sidelines. Hey, ya'll remember when we beat Kentucky and won at Florida this year? Took down them Auburn Tigers too. Ya'll at least have that to keep you warm until next season's march to mediocrity continues.

Man, six seasons with four of them having losing records in the SEC, five without making the NCAA tourney. Yes, that's a real program he's building here. Clearly, we are on a sustainable path to improvement and didn't just get hot and fluke into the Final 4 at all. I'll bet that all of his projects will be improved enough in another 5 years that they'll be able to stagger down the court just enough to slip into the postseason again. That's a real program right there! And you know with his recruiting track record he''s just going to reel in every big time player in a talented in state class this year. How can you argue with the results?

I'm a low paid, unskilled worker. I would be willing to do Frank's job for a tenth of what he's charging you Frankbots. I can yell, scowl, recruit poorly and coach boring basketball at a discount. But I know, he fluked into that Final 4 last year, so it'll be okay if he only makes the tourney once in ten years. We shouldn't aspire to more. All I know is, this type of season is what we'll typically get with FFF as our coach. I don't expect Final 4's every year. I would expect to make the tourney more than once a decade though. Oh well, now FFF can go off and do whatever it is he does during the postseason. I'd imagine it's probably swimming in a pile of money like Scrooge McDuck while laughing at the Frankbots.

...just like I predicted, another season of typical FFF basketball. Lots of yelling and no meaningful results. This is how it will be 90% of the time as long as he roams the sidelines. Hey, ya'll remember when we beat Kentucky and won at Florida this year? Took down them Auburn Tigers too. Ya'll at least have that to keep you warm until next season's march to mediocrity continues.

Man, six seasons with four of them having losing records in the SEC, five without making the NCAA tourney. Yes, that's a real program he's building here. Clearly, we are on a sustainable path to improvement and didn't just get hot and fluke into the Final 4 at all. I'll bet that all of his projects will be improved enough in another 5 years that they'll be able to stagger down the court just enough to slip into the postseason again. That's a real program right there! And you know with his recruiting track record he''s just going to reel in every big time player in a talented in state class this year. How can you argue with the results?

I'm a low paid, unskilled worker. I would be willing to do Frank's job for a tenth of what he's charging you Frankbots. I can yell, scowl, recruit poorly and coach boring basketball at a discount. But I know, he fluked into that Final 4 last year, so it'll be okay if he only makes the tourney once in ten years. We shouldn't aspire to more. All I know is, this type of season is what we'll typically get with FFF as our coach. I don't expect Final 4's every year. I would expect to make the tourney more than once a decade though. Oh well, now FFF can go off and do whatever it is he does during the postseason. I'd imagine it's probably swimming in a pile of money like Scrooge McDuck while laughing at the Frankbots.

I've always loved the "you don't need as many good players to alter a team in basketball as you do in football" line. Well...guess what? There is not near the amount of good basketball players around as there is good football players. In other words, the percentages are still pretty much the same.
This was the thread I KNEW would be coming after this season. I like what someone else said elsewhere. Last year's final four run came AFTER we had filled our recruiting class for this year. What we have coming back, plus what we are adding make for a pretty decent team next year. The status of SC HS ball and the face that we are in on some of those players, put me in a wait and see mode. Too bad some feel otherwise.

Recruiting would be better if we were in some sort of post-season this year - and that most certainly would have happened with better point guard play.

I can agree with your post. I read something the other day noting we had lost seven games by 7 or fewer points. Decent point guard play would have helped with that, and five of those seven in the win column would have probably put us back in the dance.

McGuire died in 1994 but his last season of coaching was 1980 which was 38 years ago.
