I suspect this will be one of the new sub analytics. It's mostly observational, and you cannot act on it, but sometimes circumstance plays in your favor. Can you manage "circumstances"?

We have the the disaffected superstars, the folks being replaced by incoming talent, those that don't like the coaches or school itself.

But who "probably won't" enter the portal? Is there a way to assess likelihood of team comittment? And who really hurts you, if they leave? Anybody?

We are all focused on how to get people in the portal, not who we lose. But, I suspect somewhere amongst the "glad that guy left" cries will be a burgeoning mini industry of " managing your portal
attrition" consultants.

I would check with players of football age, because you're gonna be way off if you listen to people's theories on here

It is funny that "we're glad to be rid of him" will be said about the same guys who other fans will be looking to for positive input.

Kids overwhelmingly enter because of playing time. Occasionally it's a clash with a new head or assistant coach, but it's almost always playing time. I see it all the time in baseball. My son has said goodbye/hello to lots of teammates in 4 years of college ball. They want to get on the field. If they see what they perceive to be a better opportunity, they go.

One thing is, it's gonna be increasingly difficult for programs to retain quality backups. You obviously need a good backup QB, but any good backup who isn't getting significant time is gonna be tempted to hit the portal for somewhere he can start.

1- players that can’t win starting roles

2- players escaping teams with bad morale

3- home sick

4- being ran off because of disciplinary reasons

5- $$$$$$$$$$$$$

6- or truly not happy on their current team.

I am just hoping that our staff can master the portal system and use it to our advantage.

Those that don’t transfer: Are in a particular curriculum they want to finish without losing credits, are true students, understand an education in a field they can enjoy and are training for is more important than a pot of gold they can’t reach.
