What's next for South Carolina's 2021 hoops class

Last week, the picture of the Gamecocks’ 2021 recruiting class got a little clearer.

South Carolina picked up a commitment from Mississippi wing Carlous Williams with the rising senior picking the Gamecocks over schools like Baylor, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Texas A&M.

It was a pretty big win for Bruce Shingler (his lead recruiter) and that staff going into Mississippi and landing him over both in-state SEC schools for a guy that really wanted to play in that conference.

His commitment gives the Gamecocks three in their 2021 class with two guards—Jacobi Wright and Devin Carter—and one wing in Williams.

It also means South Carolina, if things stay the same right now, is two scholarships over the limit of 13. Numbers obviously work out and there’s attrition every year on every team, but that’s where the scholarship numbers are right now.

So, now that the Gamecocks have three in the boat, where do they go from here?

For starters, the 2021 is all but done for in the fall and I wouldn’t expect any hoops commitments before the early signing period. With three already in the class, things are going to quiet down as the coaching staff focuses on continuing to recruit a few 2021 players and build their 2022 class as well.

With the makeup at two guards and a wing right now in the group, a big man seems to be the focus if the Gamecocks were to add another player in the spring with the Gamecocks having two offers out to bigs right now.

One is to 6-foot-9 junior college forward Langston Wilson out of Georgia Highlands. He’s one of the biggest JUCO players in the country and there are a few things going in South Carolina’s favor.

Loyalty is important to him and Will Bailey was the first big assistant to offer him at St. Louis, which went a long way for him. He’s built a good relationship with Bailey and Frank Martin as well.

He’s also getting attention from schools like Kansas State, Georgia, Seton Hall and recently picked up offers from Arizona State, Kansas and West Virginia.

He wants to take visits before making any sort of decision and right now (in early September) South Carolina’s in a favorable spot to land one of those.

The other offer out right now is Jonas Aidoo out of North Carolina, who’s also seeing his recruitment gain a little bit of traction this summer.

South Carolina saw him play (virtually) at a showcase this summer and Bailey started showing interest and offered him in late July.

He’s getting attention from Clemson, Houston, Georgia, Marquette, Ole Miss, Iona and a few others and it’s still very early in his process.

He won’t make any sort of decision until the spring either, and it still remains to be seen where the Gamecocks factor in since there is a long way to go with his recruitment.

The Gamecocks also landed in the top 10 for Kok Yat, a 6-foot-9 forward who recently reclassified up from the 2022 to the 2021 class. He also has TCU, Kansas, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Western Kentucky, DePaul, Mississippi State and New Mexico.

We haven’t heard much on his recruitment but will delve into that more to see where South Carolina stands.

Things can obviously change as the early signing period starts and ends and things get into the spring.
