Darin Horn, Steve Newton or Brad Scott? If there is another, list him.

I would say Horn because he absolutely destroyed our basketball program and without Downey, he would have never won more than 10 games a season. I think Frank Martin would have been better off starting a program fro scratch than trying to clean up Horns mess. I also cant stand how Horn blames South carolina for not winning saying you cant win here. I think we have several other sports and coaches who have proved that wrong in a big way.
Scott is second based on going to Clemson after here but cant really fault someone taking a job when offered if you just got fired.

Mine is Brad Scott. Horn and Newton were bad coaches, but we hired them, blame the ADs for that. Brad Scott is another story, I do not hate him for being a bad coach. I also do not blame him for coaching at Clemson, a man has a right to work to make a living, again blame the AD for not having language in the buyout that would allow him to coach for any Rival. I hate him for riding the shoulders of Clemson's players after they beat us, this was right in front of players that he recruited. After all the loss to Clemson could really be blamed on him for his inability to develop players. I also dislike him for stealing USC's playbook given to him by a GA that was still loyal to him.

Scott...although you can't blame him for taking a job, you can blame him for letting his new team carry his fat ass off of our field in front of players he recruited.

Not even close!

Horn has my vote because I hate excuses and he consistently used them. From calling his teams "young" multiple times after every loss to saying USC can't compete for players because we're in ACC territory... the guy was an absolute loser and an embarrassment to the university.

Fat Slob Scott by about 8 trillion miles. This is like asking who was the meanest world leader during WWII, I just don't see how there can be much of a discussion.

Scott, without a doubt. The other two were just bad coaches (who to be fair, had at least some success as a head coach, just not at USC). Scott, however, is not only the worst FBS head coach in the last 20 years, but also steaming pile of dung (based on my personal interactions with him).

Scott . . . by a mile. I find Horn to be annoying, aggravating, and I wish we had never hired him, but he is not at the top of my former coaches 'hate list'

Brad Scott was a thief after all was said and done, ex. using a USC auto franchise vehicle to go to Clemson AFTER he was fired, and the biggie - taking play books to show Tommy Bowdown in order to make his hiring appear more credible to the rest of Clemron's coaching staff.

Brad Scott brought our football program to its knees. Frankly, I think Lou Holtz should get the Order of the Palmetto for turning things around so quickly.

Brad Scott, he of the so appropriate initials - BS.

The real question is, why do people let such crap as this occupy their thoughts when they could be thinking of something positive? I guess it's the "woe is me" syndrome.

OK Sandlapper, who is your favorite coach of all time?

Not being woe is me just curious but thanks for being so high and mighty.

Looks like Brad Scott just made himself an FGF account.

I kid. I kid.

Is that similar to the "here I am, look at me" syndrome where one needlessly inserts an unrelated topic into a conversation so everyone will see how high they are sitting on their horse?

Excellent post

"Pepsodent" Paul Dietzel. Yes, he pushed for better athletic facilities (the Sarge, the Roost, and W-B expansion) as AD, but as a football coach, he was all talk (smiles) and very little substance, winning but the 1969 ACC championship with a 7-4 record. Our four losses that year were to UGA, TN, F$U, and West Virginia (Peach Bowl). Otherwise, it was all excuses for the usual lackluster/mediocre performance on the gridiron.

The amusing point is that it was Dietzel who pushed for ACC secession over SAT scores, yet the bitterness with the league was on the basketball court.

Had we stayed in the ACC and gotten rid of Dietzel (anybody old enough to remember the G.R.O.D. - Get Rid Of Dietzel - bumper stickers from 1974?), the basketball team would have shined instead of sinking into an abyss, and we still might have joined the SEC down the road - think aTm.

So yes, my vote is for Paul Dietzel as worst coach - for being all talk and little substance on the gridiron, and for pushing us to leave the ACC.

Stalin, I agree. :)

Scott, and its not even close. With time Horn, like Newton, won't be remembered with hate, but rather just as incompetent.

Nothing like that at all. No puzzle as to my favorite coach. He is currently employed by our university.

As to being high and mighty. That is not a requirement to be embarrassed by all the negativity expressed on this forum. If my attackers can't see that, then they are afflicted by that disease. We might pay a little attention to the motto wrapped around the seal of our university.

Yes, hiring Horn was a big mistake but when I was recovering in the hospital from getting my first pacemaker, his team upset mighty Kentucky and I let out a shout that brought several disgruntled nursed to see if I had a stroke. There is some good in most every one and I can't hate Horn for that nice surprise. Scott was an even greater let down. I can't let that make me hate him. Hate will make the hater miserable and seldom has any effect on the hated. It is just emotional baggage that messes with you and never - ever - offers a positive result.

So flail away if you must but, be aware that it has no effect on me and only fires up your own gall bladder.

Where is Sparky Woods? Lost to Citadel in '90 and had forgettable SEC seasons in '92 and '93. Even had his team revolt against him in '92 because he was such a weak coach.

Brad Scott. If he hadn't already, he cemented his status as most hated when he was carried off the field by Clemson when they beat us in 1999. Guy runs our program into the ground and then thumbs his nose at the very players he brought here.

Darrin Horn would be next for me just because of how he completely destroyed our program and has been derogatory of our program ever since.

Steve Newton was a bad coach, but you got the impression he was just in over his head. He was a terrible coach, but not somebody I hated.

Thanks goodness for guys like Ray Tanner and Steve Spurrier who have proven that you can win at South Carolina. That wasn't the case before they came.

Great post. Getting out of the ACC was one of the biggest mistakes in USC's history. Of course, it turned out ok but we spent 20 yrs mired in mediocrity except for Joe's teams.
I wonder if the SEC would have invited USC if it was still an ACC member; maybe USC wouldn't have been interested.

I loved all the hate the ACC had for USC. It made for some great rivalries.

If you could read, it might make a difference what you think, but you can't and it doesn't.

Most hated by us? Scott and it isn't even close!

Most hated by our rivals? Spurrier of course! And yes I am aware he isn't a past coach... But I doubt the rivals hated many of our previous coaches...

I'm glad we left the ACC and that's not why the b-ball team got worse. McGuire was aging and his right hand man (I'm getting old-his name is slipping away from me) died. The 1st year out of the ACC we had the #1 recruiting class in the country. We cheered "GROD" at the football games.

sandlapper, is the cannonization process really difficult?

and hating fat brad has almost nothing to do with his lousy coaching. It was his awful, negative recruiting, the fact he was carried off the field while the players he recruited were taunted with zero bars thrown on the field and the fact he was still spending our money while it happened. That guy is a piece of trash.

I can honestly say I don't hate any of those coaches. It just proves in order to win at South Carolina you have to have experienced head coach with name recognition. But the most disappointing coach has to be Darin Horn. He was gift wrapped Devan Downey, Dominque Archie, Zam jr., Mike Holmes and Sam Muldrow. He couldn't build on recruiting with that starting 5.

i dont hate any of them, but if you had a suck meter id go with newton.....he was up at the blatt pe center trying to recruit players....that should say something

I don't HATE any past coaches. And, I definitely don't understand the hate for Brad Scott. He got our first bowl win EVER and later WE fired him. All he did was get a job with a close friend of his. The fact that it was at Climpson I guess makes everybody hate him. What would YOU do if you were fired, needed a job, and a friend calls to say, "hey I have a job for you here at a rival company." Would you take it?? Yes you would.
