I know there are lots and we have heard of lots but who is the best you saw?
I remember as far back as the days of Mitchell and Hold ( dont remember those the 9-10 years before that in my lifetime as much but really started focusing around '83) but since that time, I would say Connor Shaw is the best I ever saw. Todd was good and others had their moments, but Shaw did the most and I believe would have helped any of our teams succeed.

It was a different era of football, but Jeff Grantz was unbelieveable running the Veer from 1973-75. He was a lot like Shaw in that he could beat you with his feet or arm.

Connor Shaw. Not even a close comparison in my mind. He IS the best in school history. Heart and determination.

But If I had to choose one other than him I would have to say-

Steve Tanneyhill... anyone that can rock the mullet... is my kind of guy

Dude just had terrible coaching & a less that stellar supporting cast. Had he played on the 2012 team......national title.

When Mike Hold came into a game in 1984 you Knew something good was going to happen. For that season he was the best I have ever seen,
Connor was very good but he had a better surrounding cast than Hold did.
Steve Tanneyhill was the most entertaining QB we have ever had.

Conner Shaw the best, but I have to give Taneyhill his props. His enthusiasm and love of the game was infectious. It is interesting that Bill Troup and Anthony Wright both went on to play in the NFL and get no mention. Bill Troup passed away in 2013, I believe.

My favorite was Mike Hold. The best...Connor Shaw. IMO Jeff Grantz was the best until Shaw. Lastly, I loved the way Taneyhill tormented the taters.

Tannyhill was a gamer with the best pocket presence I've seen here. Shaw was the toughest.
IDK, it's a tossup.

Steve Taneyhill or Connor Shaw. I would say Taneyhill was better as a freshman than Shaw, but by the time Shaw was a junior/senior he is hard to beat. It's kind of hard to compare the two because of the supporting cast. Taneyhill never had a Marcus Lattimore or Mike Davis in the backfield.

That said, it's pretty ridiculous that Shaw threw 24 TD passes and only 1 INT in a full season of SEC play. One interception playing a full season in the SEC might be one of the most overlooked stats I've seen. I'll give the nod to Shaw because of that.

I go back as far as the 60's and have seen them all since then. I gotta go with Jeff Grantz. Wonder if there is some video of him somewhere? I've never looked.

Tony Rice--Oh you meant that played for SC. I would say it was a toss-up between Grantz & Shaw. As someone pointed out, Shaw had more pieces around him on both sides of the ball.

1. Connor Shaw - Overall
2. Jeff Grantz - He didn't have the surrounding talent some of the other QBs had. If USC had had a decent defense in '75, the team would have won a lot more games that year.
3. Tommy Suggs.
4. Ron Bass (Sunshine) - When he wasn't injured.
5. Steve Tannyhill.
6. Stephen Garcia - When he was on, but when he was off he was off. The last game in played in at USC was the Auburn game. Gosh, he had at least 4 interceptions that game alone. And inspite of that USC almost won that game. But, inspite of all of his short comings he did a lot for USC.

Connor Shaw with Jeff Grantz only a hair behind him. Either one could have legitimately applied the Bear Bryant quote to himself: "I ain't never been nuthin' but a winner".

I'd have to give the nod to the only Gamecock QB to actually win a league championship, and the only one in my lifetime to beat Clemson for 3 consecutive years (2 in Clemson), Tommy Suggs.

Have to say Grantz for over all talent. He is the only QB I remember that also returned a kick off for a TD. I think it was against Tenn.

Grants by far. Not only could he run and throw with the best I believe he lead the country in punting but I could be wrong.

I wish Taneyhill could have played for Spurrier. Good or bad, we would have been in the news with those two together.

Agree, but would love to have been able to see Hold and Grantz play in the spread offenses of today where the QB is a duel threat, gets the snap in the shot gun, and can run the read option, pass, or scramble. That would definitely be entertaining!

If the youngsters of today, had seen Jeff Grantz play, this wouldn't be close. He's the best in Carolina history. Connor Shaw played on a much better team. Jeff Grantz was also the punter on that 1975 team. He was also the shortstop on the 1975 national runner-up baseball team. We lost to Texas in our first attempt to win the CWS.

Shaw but before that Petty. Todd has some flashes but in the end was an interception machine.

I will say Shaw as he made a huge difference on some excellent. But I am old enough to remember Jeff Grantz. Do I think he was as talented as Shaw? No. But the above poster is right, there was something magical about him.

Have to go with Connor, have seen em all since Tommy Suggs.......Shaw wasn't our most talented, but combine his running and passing with his guts, gotta give him #1. Grantz would be very close behind, could run and pass just like Shaw, and what a great offense that 1975 team had, like someone else mentioned, if that team had any kinda defense, it would have won 9 or 10 games. # 3 in my mind would be Todd Ellis, with Taneyhill and Hold next, would probably put Garcia at #6.

Garcia versus Bama
Tanneyhill, Shaw, and Ellis were good to great in a given game, but it's hard to compare players with different teams, with different styles, who played with different schemes, with different rules and dynamics in terms of what they played against and styles of the game overall. Tannyhill and Ellis played only a few years apart, but in different eras. The game changes so fast. Ellis played before Spurrier was at Florida and offenses were designed differently. Carolina had a poorly designed offense by today's standards at that time.

I think you're right. I have thought once in awhile about what SS could have done with Tanneyhill.
As far as topic-Shaw, Tanneyhill, Petty

Most disappointing-Ellis who seemed to have an eye for the opposing team's colors

Actually, he beat CU four times. Yeah, three were on varsity.
