Why is the "neutral" baseball game vs Clemson in Greenville yet again?

I thought when it was played in Charleston a few years ago the neutral location was going to rotate around. As someone from the Lowcountry, I'm sick of that game always being in Greenville.

Because Fluor Field won the bids for the next few years. I too wish it would rotate around the state, but if they outbid everyone, this is what happens. I've been each year but one up there and let me tell you, it's a great time. They really know how to put on a ballgame like this. They get the city involved and behind it and "do it right". Of course we've won all but one of the matchups up there, so that helps too. :)

I'll be honest, other than the convenience and winning the ballgame in epic fashion when it was down here at The Joe, I was less than impressed by the "show" that The Joe/Charleston put on vs. what is done by the folks at Fluor/in Greenville.

(And before anyone starts the "it's just another Clemson home game"...the tickets are split 50/50 between the schools. So if there are more Clemson fans there than Gamecocks, blame Gamecocks for selling their tickets to Tiger fans.)

It is a neutral site game. The Fluor Field promoters really like having the game there, and apparently do a good job of keeping it neutral. Apparently good enough to keep Carolina and Clemron coming back ($$$ and other considerations).

I, too, would have hoped it would rotate throughout the state.

How about writing to the athletic departments of both schools expressing an interest in it being held in the Lowcountry and Grand Strand as well, indicating that you think it would be good for the entire state and both institutions to do so.

I understand what you're saying, but golly gee, I just don't FEEL right attending a 'neutral' site game in Greenville; Charleston, yes. Maybe it's a geography thing or the fact that I was raised about 6 blocks (as the crow flies) from 'The Joe' or the thought of choosing where to eat in the Holy City from a restaurant list a mile long - anyhow, we DO usually win the ball game at Fluor, so I guess it's all in the bottom line, huh?

Well, now there are some nice restaurants in Greenville, too.

Well yeah...The Joe would be a heck of a lot more convenient for me (I live West Ashley), but oh well. It's good that my parents are in Columbia so I can just stay at their house the night before/after.

The original plan (or so I was told) was to move it around the state between Greenville, Charleston, MB, and Knights Castle. But it's not worked out that way. And yes, I couldn't care less where the game is played as long as we keep kicking their tails!

gvl game allows more tailgate time....i hate it when that happens:)...

I think Greenville just works out better for everyone - shorter travel distance, less hotels, etc.

Maybe they'll agree to play the neutral game some in the new Columbia minor league park when it gets built.

I guess it's about as neutral as Georgia/Florida football each year in Jacksonville, which is neutral enough for both schools to keep coming back.

If the Knights hadn't moved from Ft. Mill to Charlotte, and Lake Olmstead park were in North Augusta instead of Augusta, I imagine those facilities would have been given consideration as well.

Also, Georgia and Georgia Tech play each other in three midweek games each season. Once in Athens (newly-remodeled Foley Field), once at Russ Chandler Stadium on the Tech campus (wish USC would schedule Tech there......20 minute drive from my house), and once at neutral-site Turner Field, staged as a fund-raiser for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

I wonder how many Dawg fans feel it's unfair to stage a neutral site game so close to the Tech Campus?

I often wonder if those who truly complain about the game being in Greenville (not saying this OP) have ever been there more than once? I don't know how a fan could go up there and not have a good time. Ok...maybe those in orange haven't had a good time, but that's not our fault. Oh wait...I guess it is.

I have personally never been to the game at Fluor Field. I would love to go to a game there, but it is just so inconvenient to drive all the way to Greenville from where I live. I have nothing against Greenville, and I think it's great that the game is played there. I just wish it wasn't played there every year. Now that I graduated and I'm not in Columbia anymore, it's really hard for me to make it to games in Columbia, much less Greenville. I just wish the game could be played in Charleston more often, so I could conveniently see us play Clemson. I'm sure people in the Charlotte/Rock Hill area and Myrtle Beach area feel the same.

Maybe the game shouldn't just automatically go to the highest bidder. Maybe they should make some kind of regulations where the game has to go to another city after two consecutive years at one city.

In a perfect world, I'd play the game in Charleston every year. That way we can have one game in the Upstate, one in the Midlands, and one in the Low Country. People from every part of the state would have an opportunity to see the two teams slug it out at least once. The series would become a literal statewide event.

I understand the low country not liking it. But Greenville has done a great job with promotion and the pre game stuff outside the stadium.

This is true. As I said before, I was disappointed in the show put on down here. I know it was a Friday, but that "by ticket only" tailgate area was a bad idea.

Boy, I would like to, I may see if I can make that happen, it would be great seeing some of you nice folks. The last time I went to that game it got rained out. We had 4 tickets and needed one more, I had just bought a ticket and someone said the game had been called. LOL

This is the plan I always thought would be a smart one, but the report

is that the Joe atmosphere wasn't all that great. Not that I care that much. To me, the "atmosphere" is the game itself.

I never liked that bidding stuff anyway.

And this has a lot to do with the Riverdogs front office. I've heard complaints from many folks/organizations who have had events there that had all kinds of problems (that originate on the Riverdogs side of planning) that are not addressed properly or even at all.

Now, let me be clear...going to a ballgame at The Joe is always a good time. It's a great venue for watching baseball. We go to tons of games there. The problem lies with trying to plan something with their front office folks that is outside of the ballgame.

BatGirl - Does The Joe serving as El Cid's home field play any part in this?

Only if there was a scheduling conflict with The Citadel, which could very well have been the case the past couple years. That does make sense as to why it hasn't been back to The Joe. Thank you for that reminder.

But The Citadel doesn't have anything to do with the outside planning of events that would surround the game, so there is no ill feeling toward them. We enjoy going to Citadel games, and spend weekends at The Joe when we are on the road during SEC play.

I think Pelican stadium in MB would be a great venue for a game also. I agree with most posters though.....the Greenville venue has been a fun time....except for the cold weather. I will say this, the beer doesn't get warm up there!

Oh, I wasn't criticizing what you said, Batgirl. I have been there too, but

the times I went I thought it was OK. I guess I just don't pay much attention to what's going on.I'm generally oblivious or talking to someone. I remember I was really cold at one, but that's not their fault.

Joe might want to learn something from the other venues around.

Re: Oh, I wasn't criticizing what you said, Batgirl. I have been there too, but

Didn't think you were criticizing at all. Just expanding on the problems with the atmosphere at The Joe when they "host" something besides an actual game.

I don't like Fluor Field ! It's always cold there. In the last 4 years it's been cold, rainy, and snowed once.

As for what goes on around Fluor Field, I go for the Baseball Game, not for what goes on around the stadium.

For example, what the hell goes on around the Gamecock stadium, other than tailgating groups? NOTHING!!!

AND SAY WHAT YOU WANT, FLUOR FIELD IS "NOT" a NEUTRAL LOCATION!!! IT's "COLD AS THE DEVIL

THERE" every YEAR !!!!!!

That's more of a function of scheduling the game early in the season. And temperature has nothing to do with neutrality.

If the SEC began conference play with weekend four like the ACC does, and each school got an "off" weekend later in the season, say between weekends 10 & 13, we could coordinate with Clemron and the SEC & ACC offices to ensure both schools have the same "off" weekends and play the series that weekend, which would happen in April or May. Much better temperatures. I think the time of year plays a bigger role in the weather than the SC location of the neutral site game.

I cannot think of a valid reason for the neutral game to be held anywhere in the Upstate (GSP or Rock Hill). It should be a statewide affair with the Lowcountry game being played in either MYB or CHS. The Greenville environment may have gotten a little better every year as they see what works and what doesn't. CHS revived both the SoCon basketball and baseball tournaments after they were left for dead, improving a little bit every year. They got so good that they sent them to the highest bidder. MYB or CHS can make it happen and then everyone gets to enjoy the fun weekend.

I'm looking forward to Project Jackson in North Augusta..
It's going through a court battle since the stadium is being built next to a river golf club association that doesn't want it to happen..

The Carolina/Clemson game has been a focal point on one of the reasons to build this project... I can't wait..

I love it in Greenville, if my only option was to go to that landfield of a stadium that clemsux has. I wouldn't go. Greenville is a neutral sight. There are just as many, if not more gamecock fans there as Clempson fans. I do live near greenville, so I'm biased.

I'm a Greenvillain (sp) who cares not for baseball yet I go and yell like hell. I will probably go to Liberty and hook up with old Cockfriends BUT USC and the GC does very little if not this for Upstate Alum. This gives USC a chance to play on a neutral field in a talent rich part of the state. Incidentally those who keep this thing going is to be commended for doing a great planning job. It can be like a Football:....... Gainesville, Nashville, Lexington type trip for Roadcocks.....Greenville is a Great Destination...ask Hubbell, BMW or Michelin or many other private company HQs.
If you don't get a tix please join me at one of the 20+ great places around in West End, Downtown or West Greenvile (arts and booze)

Let's have the neutral site game at Spirit Communications Park in Columbia one year and see how the Taters like it.

Hilarious! Man, I'd love to see ole Jackleg's reaction to that one! LOL!

As long as Leggett's around, and he might not be much longer, they'll never play that neutral game anywhere but Greenville. He had a fit a few years ago over the logistics of it all. Think it was after the year Clemson was late getting to Columbia. He hates having his team stay in hotels basically all series when the Sunday game is in Clemson.

Greenville is 45 min from Clemson's campus and about 90 min from the Carolina campus. Im not sure we can do much better for a neutral site unless the people of Clinton, SC decide to build a 10,000 seat ball park.

Your probably right, I'm worried this year...I think its finally the year that Clemzen turns the corner in baseball. Jack Leg has a new attitude and his players are buying in. I don't expect this series to go well. Although I expect the worst, I am hoping for the best.

Yeah and that's probably why the taters came up with this

schedule because they knew it would benefit them...for a school with "tigers" as their mascot they sure are more "chicken" to play us a series home and away like it use to be...no pun intended...
