Why Should We Even Care Anymore

Okay yes maybe I am on the ledge after last night, but even after sleeping on it and clearing my head, I'm finding myself struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel right now when it comes to the future of this program. Most of this is just venting but before you call me a tater or a bandwagon fan, let me make it clear that I was born and raised a Gamecock and was around for the 1-10 and 0-11 years. I will always have a soft spot for this program but as far as I'm concerned, with the way college football is headed our window has closed...permanently.

If this was five or ten years ago then I would consider this year zero and be hopeful for the future just like the first year under Lou Holtz, but NIL completely changes the game. The way I see it, college football will soon be made up of 15-20 major programs (maybe even less than that) that will fully commit to football and will basically be semi-professional teams, leaving all other programs in the dust. Unless the rules change, we will never be even remotely close to being competitive with those programs. The university just doesn't have the marketability, the finances, the donors, or even the desire to be competitive in this new world of college football.

Even if you don't take NIL into account, our biggest strength over the past few years has been our new facilities. As nice as they are, it won't take long for them to once again be considered obsolete compared to other programs, especially in our conference. We needed to take full advantage recruiting-wise once those facilities were completed, but apparently they weren't enough for a guy that claimed he could sell ice to an eskimo. Now, we're starting all over with facilities that are now several years old, which is ancient in the world of college football.

Obviously I could talk about the current staff and the recent decisions by the university but I don't feel like beating a dead horse. I'm just not seeing much hope for the future of this program and I just am not sure that I should even care anymore. I really do hope that I'm completely wrong and that I can look back at this and laugh at it in a few years, but only time will tell.

Okay enough venting. You can bash me now.

Our administration obviously does not care about our men's sports programs. So yeah why should the fans care? It has just been one bad hire after another by RT and somehow he is still our AD?

Kudos to you for actually taking a moment and thinking before you went through your thought process. I would take a second and think about your expectations and analyze that before you totally give up. There's also nothing wrong with taking a break.

You should never get bashed for "venting." If you started 1,000 threads with the same stupid topic and joining the Like circuit within the posts then I think bashing would be fair.

Agree 100%. I have always started August with the thought of maybe this is the beginning of a new era in Gamecock football. I have always felt that way - that one day I would get to see this team win the SEC or even more.....until the last few years. I hope that I am wrong but I dont see this program ever becoming competitive with the big dawgs. I think the best we can hope for is 8-10 wins and the mid to upper mid level SEC team. I just think the decision making has been so bad by the top brass and that mediocrity has been tolerated for so long that the train has now passed us by. That Tanner is still here tells you all you need to know. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US would have been shown the door if in our various jobs/careers, we had made the decisions that knuckle-dragging Neanderthal has made, yet somehow, they are still paying him and he is still here. We all see teams year after year who will not tolerate losing and who fire position coaches and head coaches if need be. SC gives year after year after year and nothing ever changes. I have started to move away from my passion for Gamecock football and I say that specifically because I do not have a passion for women's basketball or for even men's basketball or for tennis or volleyball. do not give a flying sack of monkey poop about those sports. But alas, my passion is waning. I have finally accepted the fact that this team is never gonna be great and just enjoy what you can, while you can.
Sigh.....

We shouldn't. If we shelved the men's sports programs would anyone even notice.

I care. But not in the way I cared when I thought we might show some semblance of progress. I'm realistic. The season is over. It's not any surprise to anyone at this point.

I’ve been a Gamecock fan for close to 45 years and I’ve never been more discouraged about the future of our men’s sports, especially football, than I am now. And it’s not even close.

When the administration goes cheap, I think the target is not to excel, but to float along the mediocre levels of bowl contention each year, with maybe a peak occasionally.

It is what it is.

Lower your expectations. Go to games to tailgate, enjoy the atmosphere with friends. It's a social event.

Wbb starts soon enough.

I hate to say it but I feel the same way. Was once very passionate about USC FB and MBB especially with McGuire.

Have been talking to myself about just not caring anymore or caring very little. A HUGE mistake to give AD job to someone who was totally unprepared to make the right decisions and it seems he hasn't learned much from OJT. The ones in power who could do something about RT are too busy thinking of the next buffet bar to visit.

Tks, Beergut. You are now even richer tks to above mention and you have had a huge hand in destroying the fans interest. Shyster, grifter, conman, mouthy but unable or unwilling which is more likely to connect those words into a good FB coach.

I find I have no desire to put myself through caring like I used too. I still watch as many games as I can, but it's not the priority it once was.
The wife and I thought about going to a game this year, because there is no pressure to win, but the team is just so bad it seems like a waste of money.
I'm sure in 2025 or 2026 we'll make a small bowl game, but not staying completely invested until then.

I am tired of the few fans on here wanting to fire coaches after every loss
What kills me is the same people that are tired of it are on here after every loss still complaining, if that was me I would just quit and find something else to do! Lifes too short!

I’m glad we have won two more games then the experts predicted.

Your right the new goal is to make a bowl game every so often, to be entertaining just enough and just ride the SEC dollar. They don't need the fans in order to be profitable. I anticipate us being the Wake Forest of the East prep soon. Kentucky has taken our place at the middle of the pack. I don't remember a more frustrating time. I feel for Beamer as this place continues to be a graveyard for coaches. I really don't see any changes happening.

We're an SEC school where all 3 men's sports have sucked for years but the AD is good to go.
Carolina does not want it bad enough, certainly not as bad as the fans do.

I can only imagine grown men crying in front of their computer screens as they write on this thread. This isn't a message board for fans, its group therapy. Any psychologists on the board want to take a stab at helping these fans out?

Either way, I am starting to think that every message should begin: "I'm ToddFlanders, and I've had my hopes dashed by the South Carolina Gamecocks." Then you can tell your story.

Growing up in the 80s/90s I got used to very little winning. Sometimes like just 1 or 2 Ws a season was just another day. It was like well, it’s what we do! Then everyone says wait till next year….. Next year rolls around and of course we still suck at football

Spurrier broke that tradition of sucking for a short time and it was awesome.
