Why The Gamecocks Deserve A Sellout

Don't forget that a win would clinch at least a share of the SEC title and the #1 seed for the SEC Tournament.

That's history. USC will be at home in the first two rounds.

Here we go again.....let's hear some more whining abt a piece of dyed cotton "holding us back". Just imagine, if it weren't on our state house grounds, we might have won 33 games in football in 4 seasons (incl. top 10 finishes) and a couple of CWS championships. That damned flag is probably responsible for the graft and corruption at SC State, as well. TAKE IT DOWN BEFORE IT DESTROYS US ALL!

It's because of that disgraceful history and failure for this state to progress that we've never had a men's NCAAT Regional at the CLA.

So be it. Who cares. This is more PC crap . Guess we should all cave so we can hold a freakin basketball tournament.

Glad the NCAA is going to sites for women's basketball based on merit (like baseball). It's good for the game. Teams that succeed should hosts. Especially teams like SC that lead the nation in attendance. It's better for the game if NCAA Tournament games are filled with fans rather than empty arenas (like when USC had to go out to Seattle last year and the "host" school wasn't even in the tournament!)

It's unfortunate that hate groups have adopted the confederate flag to spread their venom, but since that is the case, for those that want to honor their "history" or heritage... why not put up the ORIGINAL flag of the confederacy (stars and bars) instead of the battle flag. To me it's a win-win. You make the "heritage" mongers happy because it's the first flag of that era and you make other folks happy because it's not associated with hate groups. Seems simple to me.

Personally, if the idea is to honor those who fought in the Civil War, then just leave the monument/statue that's there. Why do you need a flag anyway? If you've lived anywhere outside of SC, you know that the flag embarrasses our state and and makes us look like a bunch of hillbillies. It certainly hurts us economically (in the past) when predetermined site tournaments could not be played in the state because of it. Our own history has a lot of skeletons - north and south - but not everyone wants to admit that.

On the other side, it is ridiculous that the NCAA in the past bowed down to the "boycott" - the student athletes and the universities have NOTHING to do with whether the flag flies. Why should they be punished? I know the USC system has had it's state budget cumulatively by more than 100 million dollars since 2008, so obviously the university doesn't have much pull with legislators otherwise that wouldn't be happening (Thus the increase in tuition).

Go Gamecocks!

The idea IS to honor the soldiers from SC who fought valiantly in defense of this state, which is why the square battle flag of the ANV (under which most South Carolinians fought) is indeed the proper banner to fly next to the soldier's monument. I dearly love the Stars and Bars but it was a governmental flag. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing it on the grounds at all and it wouldn't rile up the historical revisionists and heritage haters (as most are too ignorant to even recognize what it is), but a private from Bamberg or Clinton fighting with R.E. Lee would have been doing so under the square battle flag. Not the Stars and Bars, Stainless Banner or Naval Jack, gorgeous as they may be. No......it's the right flag and it's in the appropriate place and it will fly there in perpetuity thanks to an exceptionally well-crafted compromise by our legislature.

As for banners "hurting" states and schools.....take a quick gander at the STATE flags of Fla, Alabama and Georgia. Are their state flags holding them back in their sports' programs? Business? If so, we could use some of that restraint in attracting international businesses like Mercedes and the piles of companies that have poured into Ga. and Fla.. Multiple SEC and national championships in football (and numerous other sports) would also likely go a long way towards shutting up the whiners of this state who insist a piece of dyed cotton, on our s.h. grounds, is the source of all our woes.

Still doesn't make sense to fly the flag to me. The statue honors those who fought. If you want honor heritage with a flag, the original flag of the confederacy still makes sense because it represents that "country" which no longer exists.

Georgia changed their state flag, did they not? None of those other states fly the flag that is most associated with hate groups and negative connotations associated with Civil War. Right or wrong, the battle flag is the symbol most associated with slavery.

And don't forget the year when the confederate flag was first put up on the state house - during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. If you think the intent of the lawmakers was to "honor heritage" as opposed to sending a message that SC did not approve of the movement, then you've totally missed the boat.

The "boycott" has affected the state... Myrtle Beach lost the ACC baseball tournament because of it. Steve Spurrier received death threats when he spoke out about it.

If you want to celebrate heritage, fly the British flag. We were a colony once right? Fly the Portugese flag since they sent Columbus this way to look for new trade routes.

That all being said... the women's basketball team deserves to host. They've earned it. The NCAA acknowledgement of the boycott in the past is ridiculous because those young ladies cannot do anything about the flag.

Go Gamecocks!

"...we might have won 33 games in football in 4 seasons"

Actually, we won 40 games in football the last four seasons.

Georgia did indeed change their state flag, Jason. Ironically, the newer one is modeled after the Stars and Bars. Great point. They ran as far away from their heritage as they possibly could, eh?

The naval jack was put atop the dome in '61 by joint resolution of our legislature and under the direction of Pres. Eisenhower, as part of the centennial celebration. There was no removal date, as there should have been. It can be debated why our legislature waited so long to put it next to the soldier's monument but it is absurd to suggest that every single member of the 1961 legislature (and dear old Fritz Hollings, as Governor) did so to rile up civil rights protestors.

Anyway, whine all you like.....the flag you dislike that flies on our s.h. grounds will be there until the end of time. Period. Read the fine print of the compromise...

Combahee... we'll agree to disagree. I'm not buying the idea that the flag was put up there solely for the anniversary of the civil war. And since my father worked at the state house and knew many of the politicians, I'll take his word over yours.

As for the fine print... I realize the clauses they put in there make it difficult to get the flag taken down, but the laws are written by man so they can be changed. Time will tell. I hope it will come down so our state won't be seen as a punchline everywhere else.

In anycase.... looking forward to the women's basketball game tonight. Will be there with my kids. Go Gamecocks!

Interesting that, in a thread about an all black team led by a black coach that have absolutely been embraced and loved with open arms by this state this season, the talk is dominated by, of all things, the Confederate Flag.

Though certainly not by their choosing, Dawn and her team are big middle finger to that flag, which is awesome.

Agreed Jack. Like I said before, it's a shame that the whole controversy, whichever side you stand on, punishes people that have NOTHING to do with it (student-athletes.) Glad the NCAA finally changed the rule and make women's basketball NCAA hosting similar to baseball (based on merit rather than pre-determined sites).

Go Gamecocks!
