Wow, did this place turn into Coastal's board! Jeez

Coastal is our little brother, and has built a good football program. Something big brother is inept at doing.

Maybe it is because Coastal is 9‐1 and we are about to lose 3 straight by wide margins? Beamer is great for a hype video, but so far not much more. We are not even competing against good teams. Tennessee is going to be ugly before 2Q.

It's because Jamey Chadwell is the greatest living football coach on the planet. There is not a team (college or pro) that he can't beat with his Coastal Carolina team. I've also heard that starting this year the NCAA will stop using the term "national champion" and start saying the top teams won the "Jamey Chadwell." And if Jamey Chadwell was at USC, the Cocks would be guaranteed to be playing for the Jamey Chadwell in just two short seasons.

Or it's because on paper Beamer has done nothing but hold serve since the Muschamp era and we're still losing in spectacular fashion to good teams? Maybe the next two weeks will be different but that's really the fact of the matter as of today - almost 2 years into his tenure.

If we hired him, we'd be changing the name to the "Fighting Chadwells".

EXACTLY. We post Coastal stuff bc its a glaring example of what a cluster Tanner has made of our program. In 2016 Coastal was FCS and was losing the Big South championship to Charleston Southern (coached by, ironically, Chadwell at the time). And in 6 short years….they surpass us in rankings, record, FBS conference titles, hosted GameDay, etc etc

We dwarf them in resources. Yet…..

Seeing the other 2 in state FBS programs thrive in smaller cities and less lucrative conferences is just maddening. Yes their schedules arent as hard as ours. I dont expect to be 10-0 in year 2. But just not awful. Theres no chance Clemson or Coastal lay the kind of turds we did this year. And it’s unacceptable

More accurately Id say hes just a glaring example of Ray Tanners idiocy. Maybe Chadwell would’ve gone 0-22 here. Who knows. But his track record at 3 different levels as a HC at 3 programs that were very average before his arrival was outstanding. And still is. How Tanner saw that, and yet preferred someone who hasnt been a HC or coordinator, just baffles some of us.

Would any other top half SEC program have made such a decision?

??? It's a Gamecocks forum and we're talking about the football season? Please feel free to highlight any inaccuracies in my comments.

Mindless Fire Ray threads are fine but people start getting uncomfortable when you start laying out actual facts/data of the team's performance.

God I wish we would draw Coastal in our bowl game. Just to put Tanners embarrassing reign on full display

It would be a great game. Hope it happens. Our Top 20 recruits against a club who is lucky to rank in the 80s for a class. The result should be obvious most every year but I wouldn't put a dime on that outcome either way.

Yep. If their QB is healthy we probably lose by 1-3 points. Their offense is incredibly efficient and their DC is good vs heavy running teams so Lloyd would have a challenge

But you can't really compare today to two years ago when Beamer was hired. At the time Chadwell had his first winning season in three seasons as Coastal's head coach. Most of his victories and at least one Big South title at Charleston Southern were vacated because of NCAA violations (which also put the school on two years of probation). In his one season as Delta State's head coach he took a team that advanced in the playoffs down to only 3 wins. North Greenville wins are fine, but don't move the needle if you're looking for a coach of an SEC team.

It's not like the guy was Brian Kelly - winning national championships at a lower level and then moving up progressively. Chadwell put together some nice seasons - but his resume wasn't close to SEC worthy two years ago. And really, it may not be now either.

Counter argument, he was a headcoach at the college level. Shane Beamer hasn't been a coordinator at any level. He is the Jeff Saturday of the Gamecocks.

Counter argument to that - he's never been near a major college football program. Like, he has zero experience with major college football and his only FBS experience is with a team that just moved up from the FCS. It's a whole different animal that even a guy like Bryan Harsin (whose resume is about 10 times better than Chadwell's) couldn't make the leap. So much about being a Power 5 head coach has nothing to do with football - probably at least half.

And Beamer was Special Teams Coordinator - which is a legit title and prepares someone just as much as OC or DC to be a head coach (which is none at all - coordinators don't do anything related to being a head coach).

Yeah it would pretty much turn out like how Appt St with one 4 star slapped Texas A&M around with their 53 four and five stars. Stars don't mean squat if you can't coach them. Would you want a 5 star Spencer Rattled or a 2 star Grayson McCall as your starting QB?

Coastal would be 10-0 if ODU didn't pass on Shane Beamer.

Could agree with this until you got to the coordinator comparisons. This kind of talk wouldnt be offered before we had to justify our hire.

Year 1 he was interim, and Coastal was transitioning from FCS to FBS. Yes they went 3-9, transitioning is hard and their HC leaving suddenly was a shocker. Year 3….they were 11-1 and hosting College GameDay.

That CSU 2015 incident was absolute nonsense. They were beating The Citadel every year and some folks there went running to the NCAA bc some CSU kids used scholarship book store money to buy headphones. Yep, that’s literally all it was. Happens everywhere, unless a rival reports it, no one would ever know.

Yep thats been my main point all along. Chadwell or someone else, a proven HC record should have been a priority. I hope the debate we are all having on here happened in Rays office about the hire. Sadly I doubt it did.

This again. Our fans with this “whole different animal” SEC stuff is part of whats holding this program back. Its the toughest conference but its not the NFL. Aside from Bama and Georgia….SEC teams are the same as the top half of other major conferences.

Id argue a HC in the SEC has FEWER non football related obligations than a HC at somewhere like Coastal. Places with fewer resources must dump more work on fewer people, including fundraising events. I played in FCS and remember seeing the HC painting lines on the practice field and organizing study halls.

At SEC programs, you have staff to handle everything. You can focus 100% on the field bc you have a “Director of Whatever” in place to handle everything else. Id put money on it that the HC at Coastal, App and Furman have longer daily To-Do lists than SEC HCs. SEC HCs, or Ohio St, Notre Dame, etc, have 1 job, win games, they’ll hire someone to do everything else. Show up to a weekly speech and radio interview and tbats it

The talk regarding Chadwell is reflective of the disappointment in the Beamer era thus far. Beat Tennessee and/or clemson, and it will stop.

Regarding Chadwell, I do think he is a good coach. Similar to Dave Clawson at Wake Forest, he has won at 3 different levels of college football. People in Winston-Salem absolutely LOVE Clawson. He is offensive-minded and has made them relevant in the ACC, at a school that's tough to recruit to. Clawson finally got his chance at age 47 to coach at a P5 school. Chadwell will get a chance to also, sooner rather than later.

The CSU players were also using scholarship book store money to buy food. By the time they were done with practice and meetings, many days the cafeteria was out of food and even closed early. Total BS.

Grayson McCall is better than any South Carolina quarterback ever. He is expected to be a 2nd round pick.

Yep. That CSU stuff was nonsense. NCAA should’ve given them at worst a 1-2 scholarship penalty for a couple years

Dark horse the comment about mccall is ludicrous.....part of the reason he is good is who he is playing against....
