Here's my local school's schedule. They start early and play 11 regular season games while looks like most don't start until the week after and play 10. Their QB is committed to Memphis. From the top of the bleachers at a NaFo game you can see the lit up Charlotte skyline since it's only like a mile or so from the border as the crow flies. In town, we'll beat up on 5A Fort Mill since they suck but probably lose again to 4A Catawba Ridge.

Man, I'm gettin' old. I remember when Rock Hill High, Clover High and Fort Mill were about all there was to high school football south of the state line. Time changes things.

Yeah, Fort Mill has three high schools, two 5A and one 4A and keeps growing so the 4A school will be 5A in the near future too, so all three will be in same AAAAA Region pretty soon.

Youngest is playing first year of middle. It will be something fun for me to follow. Other than that I hope to catch more HS games this year. It will only take 1 to surpass all the games I've attended since moving to Lexington.

Good stuff. Volunteer for the chain gang. It’s simple enough - especially in MS and the best view.

Does Rock Hill still share football stadium with Northwestern . I always thought that was smart. More public schools should do this.

Great suggestion, section907. The diehard football fan wants close to the action and the chain crew is as close as you can get. Listen to the play calling, hear the chatter amongst players, get the drift from the refs, see and hear stuff no other fan sees or hears, be right there in the action and save the price of a ticket, get a couple of shirts and a cap or two, and best of all, you can HEAR the game.

Been work the chains for the Hanahan games and the Charleston Southern games for the past 10 years. It is an entirely different view of the game. Very big difference from high school to the college game, even at Charleston Southern.

In my years as an AD, I put great value on the chain crew and people working the press box, the field manager, and the “fix-it” people. Invaluable. All were loyal, trustworthy and essential.

And I am sure you have some great stories to tell from being on the field. I love good stories.

I enjoy high school games. Not just for the football though- that's almost irrelevant. I enjoy the atmosphere at most games. I like the concessions - our local high school's concession stands are run by the band as a fundraiser and they have some good burgers. I guess I've seen 30 or so over the last 5-6 years.

My daughter is in the high school band so I'll be in the stands very soon.

Here’s a story. I was doing chains for a JV game last year. It was a pretty close game and I didn’t think the refs were having to good of a game - both ways . On one play the side ref came over to me - in between plays and asked me. - What do you call a dog with no back legs. I gave up quick. - he answered. It doesn’t matter - he won’t come anyway. Lol. Then he turned and watched the play.

Some refs are pretty cool. Some take it way to serious. Like short man disease serious.

According to coaches in the area, they still are this year. They will meet in Anderson on September 16, though Greenwood is 4A and Hanna 5A.

Yes, we still do. I am not a big fan of it though as the stadium is off campus. Makes for a bland gameday atmosphere unless one of the Rock Hill schools are playing each other.

I no longer live in SC but years ago lived in Conway and was part of the chain gang for many years ... true story. Conway was hosting Marlboro County, who signaled in the plays verbally while hoisting laminated color posters for the QB ... so, holding up a green poster (for example) and shouting out a number (10, for example) ... every play. Conway destroyed MC that night ... I kid you not, fans behind the bench/fence were accusing me of stealing their plays and signaling them to Conway ... really? So after the MC sideline would hold up the card and yell a number, they think I would repeat it to the Conway defense (who, BTW, was likely looking at their sideline for the defensive set). I understand/understood the emotions of it all, but within the context of what I just described? Anyway, being on the sideline is fun and gives you a great perspective (I was the clip guy) ... loved observing Coach John McKissick ... he had that team/program organized and you could see why they were successful and a perennial power for so many years ... then you had teams that would come in, unorganized, coaches cursing and yelling at players and when the players were cursing on the field, the coaches would yell at them for cursing (uh, really?) ... and the time Lou Saban coached at Georgetown ... those kids were terrified of him ... he could not relate to the youngsters and there is a reason they were winless and quickly did not bring him back ... the fun of HS football ... life is good - Peace!

You've got some fun ahead of you. My grandson became a long snapper because it was the only way for him to make the LHS varsity as a freshman. But he stuck with it all the way through high school. This year, as a college freshman, he's listed as the starting long snapper at Norfolk State.

Long snapper is a good way to get on the field. Mine is a tough kid with strength. A little short but stout. We’ll see where the middle school coaches like him.

I disagree, we used to gather at Northwestern and convoyed to the game. Was so much fun.
We are coming from different perspectives. You are coming from the perspective of a student. Everything is exciting when you are 16. However, as an opposing fan, nothing beats going into someone’s backyard (campus) and winning. South Pointe has their own stadium and it’s a different energy than District 3 Stadium.

My daughter and son-In-law sprung for several of these specialist camps, including one in Dallas and another in Vegas (a trip my wife and I made along with them in 2021). There were several more in Charlotte. https://rubiolongsnapping.com/player-rankings/profile?player=9664

It was expensive, but the recognition yielded him a number of opportunities, among them East Carolina. Norfolk State offered almost a full ride. They had real problems with long-snapping last year.
