To odd to be false: In the 19 and 17 games, both in Columbia, buzzards circled over the Arkansas team just prior to the start and flew off via the graveyard. They never flew over the Gamecock side of the field. Here’s hoping the buzzards find the hogs Sunday
Match this Year
Arkansas started strong in their high pressure and controlled possession for the first 25 minutes of the match. It produced 8 shots with 2 on goal but both were soft and easily saved. They had NO SHOTS the rest of the match and hardly made it into the attacking third of the field. We out shot them from that point 12-0 and were totally dominant. We scored late but Lund, their keeper made several great saves.
Personnel
Doyle and Podijil are excellent scorers and cannot be given space. Malham, P. Goins, and Cannata are very good. Their defenders are strong and physical but slow. They are rarely exposed because of the high press and the fact that Ark. is always leading. Their wings are incapable of keeping up with the speed of Zullo and Gareis. Their keeper, Lund, is very good. She is listed as 6’1” but I swear she is taller. She has a very strong leg. Shots need to be low and headers nodded down!
What to expect
High pressure from them to start the match. This is who they are. I expect them to control the start of the match. I expect they will attack almost exclusively on the left side testing Sutton Jones. She is a good player but is inexperienced and replacing a three year starter in injured Tatumn Milazzo. To withstand their pressure we need to do several things
1 Not panic and make crisp accurate passes in our defensive third. This is what Fisk and Patten are great at doing. Milazzo was also great at this and Jones has to woman up.
2. When we cannot pass our way out and are forced to clear the ball, we need to be decisive and tactical. Boot it the hell out of bounds so the D can reset or our clear balls have to get over the heads of their midfielders. If we do not clear their mids we are simply giving them a quick restart to the attack. If this happens we can be caught out of shape.
3. Counter attack emphatically with emphasis to long passes up the wing to our speedy forwards against their slow defenders.
This will be the third game in six days for both teams. We are deeper, faster and in better shape than they are. IF we hold them scoreless in the first 30 minutes our speed, depth, and fitness will be kryptonite to them.
