1. What Gamecock Central learned at Pro Day

Representatives from NFL teams descended on Columbia on Thursday for South Carolina's Pro Timing Day, with all 32 NFL teams sending at least one staff member to the event. Several former Gamecocks participated in testing and drills, and head coach Will Muschamp spoke afterwards. Here’s a look at what we learned on the day, including some team notes from the head coach.

• Muschamp updated the status of a few players. Wide receiver OrTre Smith is progressing well after knee surgery, although he will not be cleared for full, 11-on-11 team work this spring. The staff is still awaiting word on an additional year of eligibility for linebacker Eldridge Thompson, who’s been going through practice this spring despite wearing a yellow jersey (shoulder injury last season). Offensive lineman Max Iyama has not been cleared yet as he remains sidelined with an undisclosed medical issue.

• There seemed to be plenty of eyes on wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who’s projected to be the USC's highest draft selection next month. Samuel went through testing, caught passes, and showcased his ability to catch punts in front of scouts. Afterwards, Samuel was taken away for a round of interviews.

• Michael Scarnecchia and Perry Orth threw to Gamecock pass-catchers Samuel and K.C. Crosby during drill work.

• Bryson Allen-Williams, who dined with Arizona Cardinals representation on Wednesday, said that he’s needed to showcase to teams that he can play inside linebacker, turn his hips in coverage, and alleviate concerns over his injury history.

• Rashad Fenton said he has fielded questions from teams on his experience playing nickel, and that clubs seem to believe he can be a man-to-man corner and cover slot receivers. He’s been at home in Miami and will return there once he finishes in Columbia.

• Crosby did not know his 40 time that he posted, but said he has been turning in times in the 4.6-second range during his training. Steven Montac and Keisean Nixon (DBs) also participated in pro day. Offensive lineman Zack Bailey showed no ill effects from his broken leg last season and looked to be in outstanding shape. Dennis Daley, Malik Young, and Blake Camper also worked out on the offensive line; Camper posted an excellent bench-repetitions number from what Gamecock Central was told. Former offensive lineman D.J. Park was another participant.

• Snapper Ben Asbury participated, but he’s also looking to pursue a career in the Navy as a member of the special forces.

2. Gamecocks set to host several top targets, including five-star WR

As has been the case for a number of weekends during the first three months of 2019, South Carolina is set to host another round of recruiting visitors on its campus this weekend. Here's a quick look at a few of the prospects expected in town.

• The Gamecocks need playmakers in the 2020 class and they'll get one of the best in the country on campus this weekend in Washington (D.C.) St. John's five-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett, who is ranked the No. 2 wide receiver in his class and No. 15 overall player.

The 6-foot, 195-pounder is considered a major Ohio State lean by Rivals' recruiting analyst, but the Gamecocks will get the chance to show him this weekend that he could come in and play early in Columbia.

• Conway (S.C.) three-star defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway, another expected visitor, has been one of South Carolina's top in-state targets for some time, but it's been a while since he's been on campus. That makes this an important visit for a prospect who doesn't take a ton of trips.

South Carolina is thought to be in strong position with Hemingway.

• South Carolina four-star quarterback commit Luke Doty has been a mainstay on campus since he committed last summer and Doty will be back on campus this weekend and in two weekends for the spring game.

The Myrtle Beach standout plans to enroll at USC next January and is trying to get in as much time around the program as possible to make for a smooth transition and to recruit other prospects to join him.

We've posted a complete list of expected visitors on our premium message board, The Insiders Forum. (subscription)

3. Women's Basketball opens NCAA Tournament play

Who: No. 4 South Carolina vs No. 13 Belmont
When: 1:45 pm EDT
Where: Halton Arena, Charlotte, N.C.
Watch: ESPN2 (online)
Radio: 107.5 The Game (online)

South Carolina opens the NCAA Tournament in Charlotte, its home-away-from-home for the weekend, against Belmont today.

Te’a Cooper returned from an ankle injury to play against Mississippi State (end of regular season) and Arkansas (SEC Tournament), but she was clearly not herself. Cooper got several days off following the SEC Tournament, and the rest allowed her to fully recuperate and get her mind right for the NCAA Tournament.

“Te’a is looking as healthy as she has prior to her injury,” Dawn Staley said. “I think she’s in a great place mentally and physically.”

After a lackluster performance against Arkansas in the SEC Tournament, don't expect the same versus Belmont.

“Coach Staley put us through mental, physical battles over the past couple of weeks. I think that’s going to pay off in the long run.” – Tyasha Harris

“They were challenged in every drill that we did. No one likes losing, and if your taking the same effort and preparation that you did prior to losing, you’re setting yourself up for failure. I wanted to make sure that our players understood that it’s unacceptable to lose as early as we did.” – Dawn Staley

Harris named WBCA All-America region finalist – South Carolina junior guard Tyasha Harris was named a regional finalist for the 2019 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-America Team. She joins 11 others on the Region 2 finalist list. (link)

• Florida at Vanderbilt (began Thursday)
• LSU at Georgia
• Texas A&M at Kentucky
• Arkansas at Alabama
• Auburn at Miss. State
• South Carolina at Tennessee
• Ole Miss at Missouri

The change fueling Harley's success – Three weeks into the season, Dylan Harley found himself in a spot he probably didn’t think he’d be in a month ago. The freshman, who lit up the team’s preseason scrimmages, found himself after three starts bounced out of the weekend rotation and trying to adjust to life in the bullpen. (link)
